Cougar boys in convincing soccer win
Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amDIXFIELD -- There is always adjustments needed to be made and the Dirigo boys' soccer team will make some when necessary. However, things were certainly under control in its season opener at Harlow Park.
Hunter Ross and Chad Snowman combined for five goals to lead the offense and the Cougars revamped defense proved up the task in a convincing 7-0 triumph against Carrabec.
Perreault takes helm of Falcon girls' soccer
Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Following years of patrolling the sidelines, Jason Perreault has paid his dues, so when the opportunity presented itself he felt justified in stepping up the coaching ladder.
Perreault has taken over as varsity coach for the Mountain Valley girls' soccer team. Interestingly, he had firsthand knowledge of what the responsibilities entailed when he had served as interim head coach two years ago.
Post 24 golf tournament
Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amMEXICO -- The first annual American Legion Post 24 Golf Tournament will take place on Oct. 1 at the Oakdale Country Club.
It will began at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start scramble.
There will be two $5,000 hole-in-one prizes -- on No. 4 and on #13.
Also $25 each for closest to the pin for No. 4, closest to the pin on No. 2, and longest drive on 11.
Cost is $45 per person, limited to 16 foursomes (must ride). There is a minimum of 14 foursomes. Signup ends on Sept. 23.
This is a fundraiser to support Post 24 veterans programs.
Youth Soccer Challenge competition
Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 in the River Valley and Bethel areas are invited to participate in the local level of the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge being held on Sunday at 1 p.m. on the middle field in the Hosmer Field Complex.
In the event of inclement weather, the competition will be held the following Sunday, September 25, at 1 p.m. on the same field.

There were some surprises, beginning with the Mountain Valley boys' soccer team, who made their presence known in a 3-1 win against Telstar on the hill in Bethel.
Cougars edged in soccer battle
Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amDIXFIELD -- When two strong teams square off, anything can happen and that certainly was the case as Dirigo and Hall Dale matched wits in a boys' Mountain Valley Conference game Saturday morning at sunny Harlow Park.
Kevin Zembroski scored the lone goal on a deflection midway through the first half, then Hall Dale fended off some late pressure for a 1-0 triumph against the Cougars in an early season test.
Dirigo (1-1) and Hall Dale (2-0) each returned several starters from last year and figure to be in the thick of things before its over.
Falcons rally to defeat Hawks, 34-16
Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amSOUTH BERWICK -- Regardless of the venue, whenever the Mountain Valley football team shows up a battle shall ensue and that was certainly the scenario again when they traveled down I-95 for its Class B Campbell Conference tilt Friday night.
The Falcons made some adjustments and the results were effective as Kyle Duguay rushed three touchdowns in the second half in a come—from-behind 34-16 win over Marshwood. It was the second straight week that MV had ventured into the unknown by facing a former Class A team for the first time ever.

AYF Falcons open with win
Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- The Area Youth Football fifth and sixth grade Falcons opened up their regular season at sundrenched Chet Bulger Field with an 18-0 victory over the Spartans from Bethel.
The Falcons won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. The Spartans got a great kick and a favorable bounce as Will Sorensen picked up the loose pigskin before being tackled at the Falcon 19.
Cougars edged in football opener, 21-20
Sep 09, 2011 12:00 amDIXFIELD -- The Dirigo football team has to be prepared for anything and that curve started immediately in the season opener.
The Cougars needed to come from behind and led throughout the second half. However, Freeport scored late in the fourth quarter for a 21-20 triumph Friday night.
It was the first ever countable game played under the lights before a small crowd at Harlow Park.
Dirigo had taken control in the second quarter, with 123 yards of total offense, scoring three TDs to take a 20-14 lead.
