AYF Falcons rout the Raiders
Sep 30, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- The AYF Falcons improved their record to 3-0 with a 31-12 victory over the Raiders from Jay on a warm humid Sunday afternoon at Chet Bulger field.
The Falcons kickoff team set the tone early as they recovered the pigskin at midfield.
Falcons quarterback Cam Godbois then orchestrated a seven-play, 50-yard scoring drive. Keegan Davis lugged the ball twice for 19 and 20 yards to set up a Curtis Gauvin seven-yard TD plunge, using all 139 pounds of his body to cross the goal line for the 6-0 lead with 4:55 left in the opening frame.
Falcon stickers sweep the Rebels
Sep 30, 2011 12:00 amBETHEL -- The ability to respond after dealing with dose of adversity was certainly on the minds of the Mountain Valley field hockey team, who passed the test in a game Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Whitney Ruff was in position and her thought process paid off with eventual winning goal as the Lady Falcons proved to be dominating en route to knocking off Telstar, 2-1. It was Mountain Valley’s first-ever season sweep of the Rebels, following a 1-0 win in the season opener at Hosmer Field.
Falcon stickers settle for tie
Sep 23, 2011 12:00 amWINTHROP -- The ability to raise a level of play can be rewarding and Mountain Valley found itself in that position during a field hockey game. However, the team responded when it needed to.
Whitney Ruff and Nicole Burgess each scored unassisted goals and the Lady Falcons were relentless through two overtimes before settling for a 2-2 tie with Winthrop. The hot weather conditions added to the intensity displayed by both teams.

Sep 23, 2011 12:00 amDIXFIELD -- It might have taken time, but when the Dirigo and Mountain Valley girls’ soccer teams became engaged in battle, it was a classic Wednesday night under the lights at Harlow Park.
There were numerous chances. However, the last line of defense proved to be the respective goalies -- Tasha DeRoche of Dirigo and Katlin Armstrong off MV -- who each came up big as the teams settled for a scoreless tie. It was the first-ever soccer game played at night in Dixfield.

Post 24 golf tournament
Sep 23, 2011 12:00 amMEXICO -- The first annual American Legion Post 24 Golf Tournament will take place on Oct. 1 at the Oakdale Country Club.
It will began at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start scramble.
There will be two $5,000 hole-in-one prizes -- on No. 4 and on #13.
Also $25 each for closest to the pin for No. 4, closest to the pin on No. 2, and longest drive on 11.
Cost is $45 per person, limited to 16 foursomes (must ride). There is a minimum of 14 foursomes. Signup ends on Sept. 23.
This is a fundraiser to support Post 24 veterans programs.
Steelers tame the Wildcats
Sep 23, 2011 12:00 amREGION -- The AYF Steelers win their season opener against the Turner Wildcats, 26-6.
Points for this competition were tallied by Mateo Lapointe (two touchdowns),Dylan Desroches (one TD and a two-point conversion) and Chase Clark (one TD).
Quarterback Cody Hemingway did an outstanding job getting the ball to his runningbacks and making key passes leading to touchdowns. Steelers racked up well over 200 rushing yards along with 100 passing yards.

Sep 23, 2011 12:00 amWhen Mountain Valley traveled to Winthrop last week for a field hockey game, there was a familiar face on the sideline. Although the colors had changed, Liz Glover was the same person who had donned the cobalt blue and silver last fall. Glover transferred to the Ramblers and is a starting right midfielder.
“Liz has been quite an asset,” said Winthrop coach Sharon Coulton. “She had been playing plenty of field hockey for Mountain Valley, so it wasn’t like starting over because she knows what needs to be done.”
Cougars shoot down Seagulls, 46-6
Sep 23, 2011 12:00 amDIXFIELD -- Things continued clicking for the Dirigo team in a Class C Campbell Conference football game as it turned out the lights Friday night on Old Orchard Beach.
Bryan Blackman rushed for two long touchdowns and Ben Holmes threw two scoring strikes as the Cougars came out with a fire in their eyes in a 46-6 win against winless Old Orchard Beach at Harlow Park.
