Gymnastics starting at GRCC
Sep 09, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Gymnastics at the GRCC builds strength, endurance, coordination and agility, but most importantly, gymnastics builds self-esteem and confidence.
Classes will be taught by long-time Coach Sue Everett along with coaches Caitlyn Gallant and Cassie Smith, who have both been students at the gym for years and began coaching many years ago.
Coach Sue has been teaching gymnastics for a number of years and brings new ideas and strengths to the recreation program and will be a great asset to the recreational gymnasts.
Falcon field hockey preview

This will hopefully provide a boost and serve as a major incentive for the current Lady Falcons, who finished the regular season with a 9-5 record; bowing to Leavitt 2-0 in playoffs.
MVMS field hockey practice
Sep 02, 2011 12:00 amMEXICO -- Mountain Valley Middle School field hockey will have its first practice on Thursday from 2:45-4:30 p.m. at the middle school.
Participants should come prepared to exercise. All forms must be completed prior to participation and may be picked up at the school's office during normal school hours.

Rumford wins softball league
Sep 02, 2011 12:00 amOXFORD -- The Rumford Senior League girls summer softball team took home top honors under the lights on August 6th at Pismo Beach in Oxford, ending their summer league play in the Oxford Hills Softball League.
Coached by Brian Mills, teams have been competing in this league for over 15 years from Farm Team on up through Senior League. Assisting Mills was Bob Laubauskas and Gary Dolloff.
Post 24 golf tournament
Sep 02, 2011 12:00 amMEXICO -- The first annual American Legion Post 24 Golf Tournament will take place on Oct. 1 at the Oakdale Country Club.
It will began at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start scramble.
There will be two $5,000 hole-in-one prizes -- on No. 4 and on #13.
Also $25 each for closest to the pin for No. 4, closest to the pin on No. 2, and longest drive on 11.
Cost is $45 per person, limited to 16 foursomes (must ride). There is a minimum of 14 foursomes. Signup ends on Sept. 23.
This is a fundraiser to support Post 24 veterans programs.

Youth Soccer Challenge competition
Sep 02, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- All boy and girls ages 10 to 14 in the River Valley and Bethel areas are invited to participate in the local level of the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge being held on September 18 at 1 p.m. on the middle field in the Hosmer Field Complex.
In the event of inclement weather, the competition will be held the following Sunday, September 25, at 1 p.m. on the same field.
Falcon boys' soccer preview
Sep 02, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- There is some unfinished business to kick over and the Mountain Valley boys’ soccer team will need to make several adjustments to get back on track.
The Falcon slipped last fall (2-12) and were not as competitive as they had shown. Hopefully, the current campaign will be different..
MV will have a new look because it might require the defense to step-up and carry the load early on. The returning lettermen will be led by senior goal keeper Kyle Gauvin and defender Andrew Child.

Cougar girls' soccer preview
Sep 02, 2011 12:00 amDIXFIELD -- The Dirigo girls' soccer team is on the right path, but it will be up to the current group to prove just how far the path will lead.
The Lady Cougars have experience with seniors, including Larissa Bryant (forward), Alyssa Wade (midfielder captain), Paige Murphy (forward, captain) and Miranda Shurtleff (midfielder).
All the starters are back, minus Erin Turner, who graduated early. But Mariah Larsen (fullback) returns after missing all of her junior season from injuries suffered in a car accident just before preseason. She is a captain this season.
