Cougar football preview
Aug 26, 2011 12:00 amDIXFIELD -- What transpired last fall was extremely rewarding. However, the Dirigo football team is focused on the present situation.
The new-look Cougars have a new cast of players who are determined to develop their own identity.
Dirigo will unveil its new look in a regular season opening game against Freeport, under the new lights on September 2.

For those individuals who made up the Dirigo golf team last season everything proved to turn out positive.
GRCC fall sports sign-ups
Aug 26, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Sign-ups for fall sports at the Greater Rumford Community Center are now being accepted.
These includes the following:
Soccer -- grades K-6, Mondays and Wednesdays beginning on Aug. 29;
Flag football -- Grades K-4, Tuesdays beginning on Sept. 13;
Gymnastics -- Ages 3 through high school;
Karate, Jujitsu -- Ages 6 to adult;
Tumbling -- Grades 5 through high school.

Bradley played in Lobster Bowl as well
Aug 19, 2011 12:00 amRIVER VALLEY -- There is another individual who deserves recognition for having participated in the annual Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl classic. Taylor Bradley joined the ranks to play in football game last month between recently graduated seniors from through out the state.
Bradley was a late addition to the prestigious event and it provided him with an opportunity to complete his football career in style. He was a member of the West roster, along with Mountain Valley teammates Cam Kaubris and Christian Durland. Spencer Ross of Dirigo was on the West team also.

Aug 19, 2011 12:00 amThe time has finally arrived when the athletic teams from Mountain Valey and Dirigo are busy in an an effort to prepare for their respective fall seasons. The student-athletes assembled at designated practice areas on Monday morning to endure preseason drills.
A majority of the teams will conduct two-a-days, meaning practices are currently being held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. each day. These are held annually for several reasons, including developing techniques, working together as a unit, creating team bonding and physical condioning.

I just installed an anchor trolley system on a new 13-foot Trident Angler, Ocean Kayak and had to slip the orange and yellow colored craft in the water. I really wanted to see if I could navigate the sit-on-top kayak in the current of the Androscoggin River, and fish at the same time.
And, while testing the anchor system, I thought I’d fling a line into the moving water to see if I could hook a smallmouth bass. I brought along a nine-foot, Loomis 7-weight to give me some oomph when tossing big surface flies.
Peru man shines in pro wrestling debut
Aug 19, 2011 12:00 amMEXICO -- In an electric atmosphere in the sweltering gym at the Mexico Rec Center on Aug. 8, it was pretty obvious which wrestler most of the crowd was there to view.
It was a rare Monday night event of the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) On Fire, with the highlight of the two-hour event being at the mid-way point when Peru's Jason Dolloff and champion Julian Starr stepped into the ring for a tag team match with Brian Fury and a mystery guest who turned out to be a big tall dude called The Pharoah.
Webb Lake Association fishing contest held
Aug 19, 2011 12:00 amWELD -- The Webb Lake Association of Weld held their annual fishing contest on July 19 at Webb Lake.
A total of 36 people registered at Dummer's Beach to enter the contest.
Winners were:
Adults (16 and over)
1. Todd Wheeler of Bethel, 21.5 inch, 2.5 pound pickerel;
2. Paul Joriclur, 17.5 inch, 2.625-pound bass.
Children
1. Riley Bell, Weld, 22.5 inche, 2.625-pound pickerel;
2. Tanner Wheeler, Bethel, 17.5, 1.25-pound pickerel.
Nine River Valley hall of famers
Aug 12, 2011 12:00 amRIVER VALLEY -- The sheer involvement in the sport can bring rewards beyond imagination, so being recognized by the Maine Baseball Hall Of Fame is certainly a grand achievement.
The recent induction of Mark Palmer increased the total to nine who have River Valley ties that have been forever enshrined in the MBHOF. The 12 were honored at the 41st induction ceremonies at the Portland Holiday Inn By The Bay, are over 500 individuals who are inducted in the prestigious group.
