  • Bean takes over Falcon wrestling

RUMFORD -- There will be a change at the top. However, the faces of everyone involved with the Mountain Valley High School wrestling program certainly won’t feel uncomfortable.

The transition should be a smooth one when Chris Bean takes over as head coach of the Falcons co-ed varsity team. Bean is quite familiar with the trials and tribulations that wrestlers endure, after having served as an assistant coach for approximately 10 years.

  • Magnusson takes helm of Cougar boys' hoop

DIXFIELD -- There’s no rest for the weary and so it goes for the Dirigo boys’ basketball program, who have been busy pounding the hardwood. The summer schedule has been in full gear throughout July.

If change allows for adapting, then the incoming seniors have a leg up on the competition. That’s because for the fourth straight year the Cougars have a new coach at the helm.

  • UMF claims Farm League title

RUMFORD -- Farm League champions for 2011 is UMF.

In the beginning of the season the coaches knew they really had something special in the returning players from last year.

They had a very good core group of players, many of which have played together for the past three years.

With many good farm league teams this year, they knew they would have to show up ready to play every game, and that's just what they did. Going into the playoffs, UMF understood that any team could defeat any other team in group A.

  • Errington to coach Cougar field hockey

DIXFIELD -- Those who step forward to take on the task are quite aware of the sacrifice and time requirements. However, Gretchen Errington is fully prepared to accept the responsibilities that transpire as varsity coach of the Dirigo High School field hockey team.

Errington is certainly no stranger to the Dirigo program because she started out wearing the blue and white as a

student-athlete in the early 1990's. This is actually her return to Dirigo coaching.

A surprise visitor from Connecticut resulted in to a impromptu reunion of sorts.

It all started when Tim Ziko strolled into Matt Kaubris office at the Credit Union. The two former classmates and basketball teammates enjoyed the time, while trying to catch up on some old memories, but time was short. For the younger generation, over three decades ago, Ziko and Kaubris were members of the Rumford High School that won Class A state championships in 1976 and 1977; including the New England championship in ’76.
