  • MV girls rally for 16-15 lacrosse win

    RUMFORD -- The last game of the year was the most entertaining for the Mountain Valley girls' lacrosse team, who certainly pulled together when it counted in a game and were able to stage a monumental come back.

    Zayra Simard picked up a deflection and came out from behind the net to shoot low into the left corner with 1:14 left to play as the Falcons beat Camden Hills 16-15. The Lady Falcons had rallied for a 14-10 triumph against Windjammers last month.

    MV was in dire straits in the rematch and dug dig deep to overcome a 14-7 hole with 18:25 left to play.

  • Legion baseball tryouts

    DIXFIELD -- Dixfield Swasey-Torrey Post 100 will hold Legion baseball tryouts at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 5 and Sunday, June 12 at Harlow Park (Dirigo High School field).

    Swasey-Torrey will draw from all towns in the Mtn. Valley and Dirigo school districts. An 18-game regular season will go from June 16-July 16, with playoffs for the top three teams in Zone 3.

  • Camperships offered

    RUMFORD -- The River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition has been awarded funding to offer Camperships for local children ages 5-12 to attend the Greater Rumford Community Center Day Camp at Black Mountain who might not have to opportunity to attend otherwise.

  • Andies too much for Falcon nine

    RUMFORD -- The Mountain Valley baseball team couldn’t solve Bryan Mauras, who pitched a complete game and Livermore Falls stayed aggressive and utilized small ball tactics to pull away for a 15-3 triumph over Mountain Valley at overcast Hosmer Field.

    The teams had split earlier – Mountain Valley won 6-4 and Livermore Falls won 1-0 - and there were playoffs implications on the line. It was the Andies who forced the issue by making things happen in the rubber game.

  • Aylward named MVHS athletic director

    RUMFORD -- There's times when adjustments need to be made and that’s precisely how Jim Aylward is approaching his new responsibility of athletic director/part-time teacher at Mountain Valley High School.

    The longtime football accepted the newly created dual positions recently at the RSU 10 school board meeting. He was approached during the winter by Supt. Tom Ward and MV Principal Matt Gilbert, who both felt a teacher/AD model could be successful, and save money, if the right person was in place.

  • Cougars finish regular season in style

    DIXFIELD -- It was fitting that Spencer Ross, Arik Fenstermacher and Justin Conant started things for the Dirigo baseball team on their senior night in their final regular season home game Harlow Park.

    Then it was sophomores Hunter Ross and TJ Frost who came alive to end the action as the Cougars pulled away with a 12-2 win to complete a sweep against Madison.

    Three weeks ago, Spencer Ross banged out five hits and Cody St. Germain pitched a complete game in a 11-3 triumph at Madison.

    The spring season is the shortest and the most compressed, compared to fall and winter athletics that require nearly three months. In approximately one and one/half months, each respective team completes its regular season and the post season.

    Regardless, time is of the essence. So a team or individual that starts out slow do not have a lot of time to correct any shortcomings. Therefore, one major objective is to maintain focus in an attempt to put forth a maximum effort.

  • Dirigo girls double up on Andies

    DIXFIELD -- There are times when the best offense is a good defense and the Dirigo softball team discovered first hand just how both aspects can be equally effective.

    Dirigo did score early, however, it needed a boost in the middle innings and things panned out in a 12-6 win against Livermore Falls at cozy Marble Park.

    Sophomore Gretchen Bradbury was a force with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored.

  • GRCC Thrashers are AHL champs

    RUMFORD -- The GRCC floor hockey season recently held the AHL playoffs as teams fought really hard for one of two spots in the championship game.

    Team Avalanche held strong throughout the season only, losing two regular season games. This very talented and well coached team that had to battle through two playoff games to secure one of two spots in the championship game.

    Joining them in the championship game was the top seeded Thrashers, which won their first playoff game, as they had a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

  • Signups for GRCC summer programs

    RUMFORD -- Signups are being taken for summer programs at the Greater Rumford Community Center.

    There will be an open house/registration for swimming lessons (ages 1-adult) at the GRCC on June 7, 9 from 4-8 p.m. and June 8 from noon to 5 p.m., as well as for the Day Camp. All lessons have a one-time $10 registration fee to cover the Red Cross charge.

    Lessons at the Black Mountain pool from June 20-July 2, July 5-15, and July 18-29.

    Lessons at Worthley Pond from July 5-15, and at Roxbury Pond from July 18-22. Registration at ponds the firsy dat at noon.
