  • Cougar girls knock Rebels from unbeaten ranks

    DIXFIELD -- To the victors go the spoils and the Dirigo softball team certainly fit the billing Friday afternoon in a Mountain Valley Conference game.

    Junior Aylssa Wade pitched a complete game and the Lady Cougars scored two runs in the third inning and held on for a 2-1 upset win over previously unbeaten Telstar at Marble Park. The Rebels, who had beat Dirigo two weeks ago in Bethel, suffered their first regular season loss in three years.

  • Dirigo Wellness Center 5K Race/Walk

    DIXFIELD- The Dirigo Wellness Center will be hosting a 5K Race/Walk on Sunday, June 5 to raise funds that will be used to maintain and upgrade the center equipment and to purchase/replace needed items.

    Health Coordinator Laurie Soucy noted, “With the school budget being cut, I don't want to ask for a lot so I am doing the fundraising to cover those expenses.”

  • Dirigo tennis girls win, 5-0

    DIXFIELD -- The Dirigo girls' tennis moved to 5-1 after defeating a winless Mt. Abram team by 5-0.

    In singles:

    Betsy Noyes (D) defeated Staci Plog, 6-2, 6-0;

    Addy Fuller (D) defeated Brandy Pease, 6-1, 6-0;

    Meredith Brown (D) defeated Maggie Elliott, 6-0, 6-1.

    In doubles:

    Cassidy Bigos and Ryanne Dailey (D) defeated Clayre Plog and Marish Kendall, 6-0, 6-4;

    Grace Hebert and Coral Howe (D) defeated Lakeesha Woodcock and Lindsey Benoit, 6-0, 6-1.

    In exhibition:

    Clayre Plog (MA) defeated Kirsten Uhde, 8-6;

  • Racing Hearts

    RACING HEARTS- The front runners in the 1st Annual Healthy Hearts 5K are seen here as they cross the Memorial Bridge in Rumford Sunday. Dan Crooker went on to win the mens' division with a time of 17:27, Nick Woods took second with 19:43 and Gunnar Bradbury took third with a time of 19:58. The inaugural event had 90 participants and raised almost $2,000 for the American Heart Association.

  • Oakdale golf news

    MEXICO -- Oakdale Country Club golf course opened for the 2011 season on April 22, about two weeks later than last year.

    Oakdale is offering a new twilight membership this year. This membership is for play after 3 p.m. weekdays and after 2 p.m. on weekends. Cost for this membership is $300. However there are other restrictions. For more information, contact the clubhouse at 364-3951.

  • Moreau named asst. principal/AD at Dirigo H.S.

    DIXFIELD -- The challenge will be a new chapter in the life of Chris Moreau, who was named on May 9 as the new Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Dirigo High School.

    The 38 year old is certainly familiar with the territory, who currently serves a dual role as assistant principal/co-curricular director at Lisbon and is equally versed in the importance of the Mountain Valley Conference.

    Moreau will replace Charlie Swan, who has been named the new Principal at Dirigo Elementary.

  • MV edged in overtime thriller

    RUMFORD -- The Mountain Valley softball team came up shy in a game at the old ball grounds.

    Molly McCafferty singled home Sam Werzarski with the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth inning for a 3-2 triumph against Mountain Valley. The contest was an old-fashioned pitching dual between McCafferty and the Falcons Lindsay Gallant (three hitter), who each threw complete games.

  • Falcon girls roll past Cougars

    DIXFIELD -- It’s extremely important to remain focused because anything can happen and the Mountain Valley softball team certainly took advantage of the situation at cozy Marble Park.

    Hannah LaPointe doubled home teammates in a five-run second inning and Lindsay Gallant pitched a complete-game six hitter as the Lady Falcons triumphed 5-3 against Dirigo. It was the second straight win for MV, who had flew past Livermore Falls by 17-6 three days earlier.

  • Fenstermacher records no-hitter

    DIXFIELD -- When Arik Fenstermacher steps up his performance, the results can be electrifying and Dirigo reaped the benefits in a baseball game at windy Harlow Park.

    The senior southpaw was in complete control and tossed his first high school no-hitter with 10 strike outs as the Cougars remained unbeaten with a 10-0 triumph against Mountain Valley.

    It was the second time in less than a week, and fourth straight game that Dirigo has mercy-ruled Mountain Valley. The teams play each other three times this spring because Carrabec disbanded its program.

  • TWO TURKEYS BAGGED

    TWO TURKEYS BAGGED -- Matt Irish, 13, of Carthage, bagged his first two turkeys on Youth Day on April 30. The son of James and Terri Irish of Carthage, Matt harvested both turkeys at the same time with a single shot. The turkeys, shot in Jay, weighed 14 pounds, 11 ounces, and 12 pounds, 10 ounces.
