  • Blackman makes cheer history

DIXFIELD- Dawn Blackman, a senior at Dirigo High School, has been invited to the 22nd Annual Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic in July. She is the first cheerleader in the history of the school to have the honor.

While Dawn is very soft-spoken and modest of her accomplishments, her parents, Rick and Karla, are very proud of what their daughter has made of her cheering career thus far.

  • Falcon championship teams recognized at State House

AUGUSTA -- It proved to be a time of reflection when the Mountain Valley athletic teams were recognized with sentiments for their successful seasons at the state house earlier this month.

The Falcon Class B state championship football and wrestling teams, along with Christian Durland, were honored before the 125th state legislature. They were invited to sit in the gallery by local state Reps. Sheryl Briggs and Matt Peterson. Briggs proclaimed it to be Mountain Valley day during remarks in the vast chamber.

  • River Valley Outdoors

One day several years ago, I noticed a truck with a Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife emblem parked down by the Androscoggin River. I walked up to the back of the truck where there happened to be this official-looking fellow cutting up a smallmouth bass. I just had to ask the silly question that was on my mind at the time.

“Are you going to eat that fish,” I said with a grin.

  • Falcon girls' lacrosse preview

RUMFORD -- What a difference a year makes and that’s precisely how the Mountain Valley girls' lacrosse team needs to feel because it has plenty of experience to rely on entering the upcoming season.

The Falcons went 5-7 in 2010.

  • Falcon boys' tennis preview

RUMFORD -- It will be like starting over for the Mountain Valley boys' tennis team because as the sea ebbs and flows, so does the field of available athletes for any sports team.

In these times of declining enrollment, the Falcons are pressed sometimes to even muster enough players to fill all seven starting positions.

  • Falcon girls' tennis preview

RUMFORD -- The sport of tennis has numerous peaks and valleys because the complexion of a match can be altered on each serve or volley. The degree of success usually rests on the shoulders of the individual players and their reactions to any adverse situations.

The times when things seem bleak can be aided by a positive coach and the Mountain Valley girls' tennis team welcomed back Elaine Michaud, who will hopefully make a difference. Michaud who has been the girls' coach since the merger over two decades ago, was forced to step away last spring while recovering from hip surgery.

  • Thrashers remain unbeaten

RUMFORD -- The GRCC Thrashers continue their winning streak with a win recently, improving their record to 5-0.

Scoring goals were Jacob Blanchard, Alex Gorham, Jacob Lord and TJ Payne. Outstanding defense was displayed by Noah Breton, Nolan Downs, Cody Hemingway and Jarrod Downs, who made it tough for their opponents to score. Playing goalie this week were Payne and Lucas Drapeau. Payne had his opponents shut out in the first two periods of play while Drapeau had some very nice stops in the third.

As most of us remember Danny Garneau passed away last year after fighting a long battle with leukemia.
