  • Dirigo Cougar baseball preview

DIXFIELD -- A new year creates new challenges and there are certainly numerous questions surrounding the Dirigo baseball team, who realize this current group needs to find its own identity.

The new faces will set several goals and to work hard because the spring season is very short. The Cougars have four returning lettermen, led by seniors Arik Fenstermacher (pitcher, centerfielder), Spencer Ross (shortstop, second baseman) and Justin Conant (catcher, outfield). Junior Ben Holmes (pitcher, third Base) will be counted on heavily also.

  • Softball coaches meeting

MEXICO -- The River Valley Men's Slow Pitch Softball League will hold a coaches meeting for any team interested in participating this year.

The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mexico Recreation Center. The fee per team to participate in the league will be $300. An itemized list of the cost will be available to anyone requesting so at this meeting. For more information, contact Randy Gunther at 240-6152.

  • Rec tournament raises $5,500 for boosters

RUMFORD/MEXICO -- The Mountain Valley Recreational Basketball League hosted their 10th annual invitational tournament and raised approximately $5,500 for the Mountain Valley Athletic Boosters.

There were 14 total teams, eight A and six B Division teams, with games played at the high school and middle school.

  • Class Acts wins rec league title

RUMFORD - When the Class Acts team finally decided it was time to pull together, their efforts proved fruitful to win the ‘A’ championship game in the Mountain Valley Recreation League Basketball Tournament.

Andy Bedard scored 18 points and sparked a late surge, while Matt Clement led the defense in Class Acts 65-52 win over Liberty Mutual at Puiia Gymnasium.

Class Acts found itself trailing when Bedard converted a conventional three-point play on the front end of an 11-0 run. Class Acts scored 18 of the final 21 points in the game.

  • River Valley Outdoors

Open-water fishing season happens to be off to a snowy start – can anyone imagine grabbing a fly rod, donning waders, and heading down to the river.

As I write this column, the first day of April, a fresh blanket of heavy snow fall steadily drops on the River Valley. This is no April Fools’ Day joke; I would need snowshoes to access any of my normal fishing locations. Does this deter me from dreaming about fishing most of my waking hours? No.

  • Fundraisers for Garneau Scholarship

RUMFORD -- The Mtn. Valley High School Athletic Boosters and the Class 0f 2011 are teaming up to honor a classmate of theirs.

As most of us remember, Danny Garneau passed away last year after fighting a long battle with leukemia.

The Class of 2011 and the MVHS Boosters are raising money to go towards The Danny Garneau Scholarship. They have a couple of fundraisers that will be happening at the high school.

  • Crutchfield to become Cougar grid coach

DIXFIELD -- The more things change, the more they remain the same and that’s precisely the approach David Crutchfield has adopted since being named the new football coach at Dirigo High School.

  • Thrashers off to great start

RUMFORD -- The Thrashers are off to a great start in GRCC floor hockey season with a 4-0 record after two weeks of play.

Scoring goals in the first game for the Thrashers were Jacob Blanchard, Cody Hemingway, Nolan Downs, Alex Gorham, Noah Breton and Jacob Lord.

Making some nice saves as the Thrashers' goalies were Jarod Downs, TJ Payne and Lucas Drapeau. Very strong defense from Keyleigh Dupuis and Lucas made it tough for their opponents to hit the back of the net.

  • Wrestling champion

TWO-TIME CHAMPION -- Anthony Mazza, Jr. recently won the Pee Wee state wrestling competition in the 71-pound division on March 26 at Noble High School. The second grader from Rumford Elementary School won his second straight state title. He is pictured with his proud dad, Anthony Mazza, and his trophy.

  • Cougar boys rule in undergrad tourney

DIXFIELD -- It’s almost second nature for student-athletes to practice their skills when and whereever an opportunity exists and the Dirigo boys' basketball team is no exception.
