  • Cougar wrestlers place third in state

AUGUSTA -- The opportunity was in full sight, however, the Dirigo wrestling team fell shy of its goal in one of the closest Class C state meets in recent memory with a third-place finish on Saturday.

The Cougars (120 points) placed behind Foxcroft Academy (128) and Lisbon (122).

  • Cougar girls edged by Jay, 41-39

DIXFIELD -- The opportunity was front and center, however, Dirigo couldn’t reach the top step in a regular season finale of a girls' basketball game.

The Lady Cougars held a slim two-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but Jay relied on Beth Moore, who scored a game-high 22 points and was equally solid from the free throw line in a 41-39 win over Dirigo at Defoe Gymnasium.

  • Tigers drop Cougar boys, 58-49

DIXFIELD -- When a Tiger is backed into a corner, it's instinctive to battle and the Dirigo boys' basketball team found out first hand exactly how tough things were in their regular season finale.

The Cougars were geared for a season sweep against Jay, however, it was the Tigers who rallied for a 58-49 win at packed Defoe Gymnasium.

Jay started fast with a double-digit lead early the first quarter and set the tone as the action never let up. The Tigers had plenty of incentive and it definitely showed.

  • Cougar boys have lofty playoff goal

DIXFIELD -- The Dirigo boys' basketball team had an interesting regular season. However, that’s history as they enter the second season with a goal of defending its regional championship.

“From the start, the expectation was for us to come together as a group, and we have,” said coach Rebecca Fletcher. “We knew there would be an adjustment phase, but that happened pretty quickly and smoothly. We also knew there would be some ups and downs, having a very young, inexperienced team.”

  • Cougars knock Falcon boys from unbeaten ranks

RUMFORD -- Cody St. Germain scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to spearhead Dirigo’s dominating performance in a 54-40 win against Mountain Valley in a boys' basketball game played at crowded Puiia Gymnasium.

It was the first MVC loss for the Falcons since the winter of 2009 and avenged the Cougars' 52-45 loss to their rivals, in Dixfield last month.

  • Falcon boys looking to regain momentum

RUMFORD -- Things never remain the same and the Mountain Valley boys' basketball team experienced adversity firsthand during the latter part of the regular season. However, the team has an opportunity to redeem themselves in the upcoming Class B playoffs.

The Falcons struggled to find their groove during tight wins over Winthrop and Livermore Falls, followed by a loss to Dirigo.

MV is a very uptempo team that likes to run and its objective on offense is to launch up a shot every 12 seconds.
