Cougars pull away to ground Flyers

TJ Frost provided the Cougars with a spark and Ben Holmes led a second-half surge in a 55-37 win over No. 4 Waynflete.
GRCC floor hockey
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amRUMFORD -- The Greater Rumford Community Center is taking signups for floor hockey through March 11.
Even if you played last year, you must still register. If you do not sign up by March 11, they cannot guarantee you will placed on a team.
The AHL is for boys and girls in grades 1-4, with the NHL for boys and girls in grades 5-8.
To register or for more information, call the GRCC at 369-9906.
For anyone interested in coaching, there will be a meeting on Tuesday, March 8, with the AHL at 5 p.m. and the NHL at 6 p.m.
Lady Falcons battle hard in playoff loss
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amPORTLAND -- The efforts were certainly prevalent, however, the Mountain Valley girls' basketball team couldn’t get over the hump in a Western Maine Class B quarterfinal game played on Feb. 22.
The Lady Falcons had pulled to within one point following two baskets by McKenzie Paterson, but No. 4 Greely held on in the final minute for a 42-39 win at the Exposition Building. It was the fifth straight year that Mountain Valley had lost a playoff game to the Rangers, including last year 46-21 in quarterfinal and in the 2009 semifinals by 49-27.
Falcons' Woods takes Class B skimeister
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amRUMFORD -- Nick Woods of Mountain Valley followed up on his MVC skimeister crown by earning the Class B skimeister title at Black Mountain on Thursday.
In the giant slalom, Woods placed 17th, then 19th in the Nordic freestyle, 10th in the slalom and 29th in the cross-country classical race for a total of 75 points. Teammate Lance Richard placed sixth in the skimeister at 166.
For the girls' skimeister, the Falcons' Kym Couch placed fourth with 152 points.
Overall, the Falmouth boys defeated Yarmouth. For the girls, Yarmouth outdistanced second-place Falmouth.

One event that they would like to see progress into a successful part is the annual Chili-Chowder contest on noon on Sunday, March 6 in the base lodge. They are now accepting reservations from restaurants, chefs or individuals who would like to participate.
First place prizes in each category will win a $50 gift card to Pottery Barn/Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Decor.

Winterfest means fun for the whole family
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amRUMFORD -- Black Mountain of Mountain is celebrating 50 years with a weekend full of fun for the whole family.
On Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., lift tickets are $10. On Friday and Saturday from 6-9 p.m., lift tickets are $5.
On Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., lift tickets are $20.
Winterfest gets underway this Friday with the Becky Shaw Ski Day (see other story on this page), live entertainment, and food and drink specials.
Cougars edged in MVC title double OT thriller
Feb 25, 2011 12:01 amAUGUSTA -- The action was fast and furious, as the Dirigo and Boothbay boys' basketball teams battled through the Mountain Valley Conference championship game played in the Augusta Civic Center.
The Cougars' Spencer Ross buried a three pointer with 57 seconds left in double overtime. However, Boothbay made the second of two free throws with 34.6 seconds and held on for a thrilling 89-88 win.
Falcon boys clipped by Yarmouth, 77-52
Feb 25, 2011 12:01 amPORTLAND -- The second season creates a different set of intangibles. However, the Mountain Valley boys' basketball team hasn’t been able to get a firm grasp on the situation and it proved costly at the Portland Exposition Building.
Josh Britton scored a game-high 28 points and Yarmouth pulled away in the second half for 77-52 win in a Western Maine Class B quarterfinal playoff tilt.
International Snowshoe Championships on tap
Feb 25, 2011 12:01 amLEWISTON -- Le Paresseux Snowshoe Club of Rumford will host the 103rd International Snowshoe Championship in Lewiston this Friday through Sunday.
The members of the championship committee have been working hard to make plans for the upcoming event. There will be snowshoers attending from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Quebec, Canada, Ontario, Canada and Maine.
