Opinion

  • Wait! What?

    Wait! What?

  • The Basket Lady

    Diapers for Sheltering Wing!

Many of you have probably heard about the Sheltering Wing, an outreach ministry that the late Naomi Farrar dedicated her missions work to in the River Valley that serves expectant moms-to-be, children, and families in need of baby supplies, cribs, and basic necessities.

  • Things cannot go on as usual

    To the Editor:

There is indeed a group in Mexico that is pushing for a tax cap.

I wonder if "the group" is perhaps much larger than some would like to think. A large portion of our population is older and is therefore on a fixed income. The COLAs (Cost of Living Adjustments) for retirees that may have been taken for granted in the past cannot be counted on today.

If the COLA is even given, it certainly does not cover the actual cost of living increases. Therefore, we need to decide where to cut our spending.

  • Give support to keep animals and business local

    To the Editor:
It is budget time again for towns. Animal shelters and animal control are included in that budget battle as well as police, fire and schools, etc. Several years ago, the animal welfare budget was shifted, by a prior town manager, from the managers office department budget to the police department budget.
Since that time, the animal department, in my opinion, has been diminished, and disrespected along with being forced to operated on less then base wage rates.

  • Cooking

    Soup and (Fresh!) Salad

During that hot spell with temperatures reaching into the 90s a couple of weeks ago, I thought my soup-making days were done until fall. But I was wrong.

Like the old-time Maine sage says, if you don’t like the weather, just wait a minute.

Now, some of us have given into relighting the wood stove during the evening, closing the windows, and actually making soup. The temperatures have dipped into the 50s, 40s, and for some of us, the 30s.

  • Thanks for supporting benefit

    To the Editor:

I would like to express, a little belatedly, but still very heart felt thanks to all who contributed in any way to the benefit held in my honor at the American Legion a few weeks ago.

I really cannot find the words to say what I truly feel and how much your donations of time, work and money mean to me and how much it will help in the coming few months.

  • Seeking support for Dixfield selectman post

    To the Editor:
I am again writing to the citizens of Dixfield to ask for their support. It was just last November’s election when I requested your votes to elect me to finish Katherine Harvey’s term. I sincerely appreciate those votes.
That term is up and I am running now for a full three-year term.
Mackie Gill and I are both running for re-election and our only agenda is to be able to return to the Board and continue working for the betterment of Dixfield.
    Norine Clarke,
    Dixfield
