  • Thanks for wonderful benefit

    To the Editor:

Todd Piper and family would like to graciously thank all of our friends and family for helping to put on such a wonderful benefit.

We would also like to thank all of our local businesses and friends who donated so many great raffle items. It was greatly appreciated to see many of our local business and friends as well as family come out to support such a great cause.

We truly are very fortunate to live in such a supportive community filled with so many caring people.

  • Post 100 Commander's Corner

Fellow Veterans of Post 100 American Legion in Dixfield. Our time is near for the nominations of new Officers.

The positions still open are as follows: 2 Vice Commander, Historian, Adjutant. We have Officers who are ready to step into some positions and carry us into 2014.

It is with great respect that another has been called to the great commander's side. We have some news, for those who haven't paid this year's dues. You are in suspension of Legionnaire rights and privileges. You will not be able to transfer to another post.

  • Post 24 Commander’s Corner

It sure is sad the amount of Legionnaires that have reported to the high Commander of us all since last month's article. We have hosted a few funeral receptions and it is nice that the hall was available for these families. One less thing for them to worry about.

  • A discredit to our "scenic" valley

    To the Editor:

Canton Carthage and Dixfield -- You three towns and Roxbury are going to be a discredit to our "scenic" valley.

Governors Baldacci and King saw money made before our wilderness is saved. If anybody could get inside this wind industry and uncover the scams of government mandates and subsidies, you would be red-faced in shame.

Carthage town fathers led a special town meeting with no regard for “handicapped” and vital information was withheld.

  • The Chamber Chatter

There is a free “Ski & Tube Night” at Black Mountain Ski Resort from 4-9 p.m. on Thursday, February 14. This event is sponsored by Franklin Savings Bank. Ski and board rentals are available for $15 but there is a limited number available so it will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • The Basket Lady

Today is Lisa Marie Presley’s birthday -- just a little fun fact to jump-start February the first in 2013. Hopefully, she won’t get all shook up when Elvis sends her lots of teddy bears from Rock 'n Roll heaven.

Walking down the path of life toward Present Street, Basket Lady will invariably meet up with a complete stranger who will start up a conversation about “their things from the inside out.”

  • Snowshoe Club says thanks

    To the Editor:
The Snowshoe Club athletes would like to send a very heartfelt thank you to the following individuals and businesses for their donations for the Chinese auction on Jan. 19:

    Something for Valentine’s Day

With mid-February about to arrive, along comes Valentine’s Day, the day that reminds us to remember the ones we love, as well as that spring is that much closer.

By this time in March, we’ll smell spring and begin to notice some very brave bulbs trying to push their way through the soil.

But for now, with Groundhog’s Day behind us and Punxatawney Phil’s proclamation that at least six more weeks of winter are to come, we can devise some ideas to show our spouses, children and friends that we care for them.

  • Thanks for supporting wreath project

    To the Editor:

I can't begin to thank all the people who supported my quest of placing a wreath on as many cemetaries and war memorials as I could. These wreaths that can be seen hanging at the front of several cemetaries are to honor all the veterans in these cemetaries. The support and donations were unbelievable and there are so many people to thank.

  • Orate less, perform more

    To the Editor:

Apparently, members of the Rumford Selectboard used recent meeting time to attack me personally because I've made it clear they've failed in their responsibility to do something about the condition of Strathglass Park.

Interesting: a private citizen, a volunteer, urging the town to do its job is attacked by the same public officials who are the ones who failed to do that job. Not a bad way to try to draw attention away from their own failures.
