Thank you for helping my husband
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
I would like to say thank you to the people who stopped on Feb. 20 to help my husband, who had fallen beside the road, helped him to get on his feet and walked with him to our home.
I didn't get a chance to ask any names, so hopefully they'll read this letter. It's so good to know there are still caring people around. Thank you and God bless you.

Cooking
Feb 25, 2011 12:01 amWe all remember the myth of our first president who chopped down the cheery tree, then was honest enough to admit it to his father.
Whether the young George Washington chopped down that tree or not, he has been forever associated with cherries.
His birthday, Feb. 22, has been rolled into Presidents Day, a day it seems for car sales and a much-welcomed winter vacation. It’s also a time to look for yummy and creative ways to use cherries.

The Basket Lady
Feb 25, 2011 12:01 amSomething’s up or is it down? Hard to say; but Basket Lady’s had a double dose of life’s setbacks and we’re just six weeks into the New Year.
The truth be told though, it’s those setbacks or problems that are our potential teachers.
One of my favorite posters says, “Life is a test. It is only a test. Had this been a real life you would have been instructed where to go and what to do.”
Chamber Chatter
Feb 25, 2011 12:01 amWe are having our River Valley Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Dinner on April 30th.
Honored categories will be Business Person/Business of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Customer Service of the Year and Non-Profit/Community Service Leadership Award.
This is always a great time for our members and very worthy recipients of the awards. At this point the theme looks like it will be a sock hop. Poodle skirts, saddle shoes, penny loafers, hair slicked back (if you have enough or any to do so), pony tails, Happy Days!
Has this ever happened to you?
Feb 25, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
A strange thing happened on the phones on Feb. 15.
I was calling the script line for the Rumford physicians' group to get a prescription refill. When you first get that line there is a recorded message, then you give your order. While I was doing that, a young man cut in on me and wanted to know why I called him on his cell phone?
Number one, I did not call him. Number two, how could he have cut in on a line that was in use?
We ended up with a three-party line. I thought party lines went out ages ago.
Renewable energy, advanced technology?
Feb 25, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
We need solar energy initiatives in Maine. Wind technology is old and inefficient with few job opportunities for Maine residents. Thomas Edison tried to lead the way 100 years ago.
"We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel when we should be using nature's inexhaustible sources of energy-sun, wind and tide. I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that." Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931).
05-Support Rumford Library08
Feb 25, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
I am writing this letter in response to the drastic cuts that have been made to the Rumford Library’s budget for the past three years. I no longer live in the area, but feel that I have an obligation to respond to what, worryingly, has become a trend that we should press the town of Rumford to reverse immediately.Forsake loan guarantee to Independence Wind

Accusations should be backed with evidence

In last week's letter to the editor, Ron Theriault said of me, "Jon Starr has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to Rumford politics."
