What is our identity?
Apr 26, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Over the past 10 years, I have witnessed the identity of the citizens of the River Valley, especially in Rumford, change at an alarming rate to now I am not sure if we know who we are as a community.

Apr 26, 2013 12:00 amDowntown Rumford is going to be a plethora of excitement on Saturday, May 4. During the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Festival, not only will there be a lumberjack breakfast to start off the day but all day there will be activities such as: an apple pie dessert contest, an axe throw, a log toss as well as a skillet toss, a jean and flannel lumberjack dance, coloring and drawing for the kids, a parade, wagon rides, a Paul Bunyan look-a-like contest, tall tales and the zip lines over the mighty Androscoggin River.
Work together to the benefit of all

I am writing in response to an article in the Rumford Falls Times dated April 10, 2013, titled, "Hope of sharing services?"
I have lived in this area all my life. I have operated a business here, have been involved on several municipal boards and have talked about "sharing services" for years. It has always seemed to fall on deaf ears.

Apr 26, 2013 12:00 amIn the Good Humor Town, there’s a buzz swirling around in the spring air that the very first Paul Bunyan Lumberjack festival will welcome the townspeople and visitors near and far as early as eight a.m., when the good folks at the Legion Post 24 will serve up a stack of hot cakes for those hankering for a hungry man breakfast on May 4, but the fun is just beginning.
Cooking
Apr 26, 2013 12:00 amAh, it’s almost the end of April and that means, among other things, that the local farmers’ markets will soon be opening. Some of their member farms already have, or never closed, because they offered freshly made baked goods, salsas and other wonderful foods.
So, although our own gardens may not have anything in them to eat just yet, our hard-working local farmers are gearing up for another year of providing local, close-to-home healthy foods to anyone who wants nutritious eating.
Save the paper mill; save Rumford
Apr 26, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
A group of Rumford taxpayers have submitted a town ordinance proposal for review and approval by the Rumford voters.
This action by the Save Rumford citizen committee was necessitated by the inaction of the Rumford town officials after a formal notification by the Rumford Paper Mill of a financial emergency.
Take control of your taxes

Another budget meeting in Mexico and it was pretty much the same as usual.
The selectmen accepted every amount presented and voted unanimously on all the figures to accept them.
The budget committee dd take $50,000 from police and $30,00 from the rec department. This does not amount to much as the voters never get a chance to vote on budget committee's figures.
Let us be prepared

Sometimes it is good for an Irishman to say very little.
We have seen most of the paper machines retired, many jobs lost in our paper mill over the last few decades.
Paper mills close.
Unless one or more new paper machines go on-line in the paper mill that are competitive in the world market, we must understand that the mill is moving towards a close.
Let us not panic; let us not blame anyone. Let us be prepared.

Sincere appreciation from the Hodsdon family
Apr 19, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The Hodsdon family would like to express their sincere appreciation to everyone in our community.
The outpour of support with cards, food, personal calls and hugs will never be forgotten.
To the American Legion, Mexico Explorers, Oxford County Mental Health, local Fire Departments and businesses: Thank you for all the time and energy spent on making Donald's benefit a huge success.
This was also shown by people, family and friends who attended and/or donated food and other items to the Chineese auction.
