  • Gun rights in the "land of the free"

    To the Editor:
Nothing could be more heartbreaking that the school shootings of innocent children and heroic teachers in Sandy Hook, CT  that occurred too recently.

  • Bills could severely cut back funding

    To the Editor:

The Dixfield Select Board and Finance Committee are currently teaming up to prepare their recommendations for next year’s municipal budgets.

A series of bills introduced to the Maine State Legislature would severely cut back funding to Maine towns.

  • The Basket Lady

In the Good Humor Town, basket lady put together six thank you baskets for some every day earthly angels that showed a kindness to others in word or by deed.

Somehow along the way of making up the baskets, beans came to mind. In the South, eating lots of beans is a way of life but you must have cornbread to scoop up the juices from the beans. Yummy!

  • Thanks for support

    To the Editor:

I would like to thank all the local clubs, veterans and friends who supported our annual Easter basket raffle at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris.

This is one of the fundraisers that is put on by Western Maine Veterans Advisory Committee during the year. These funds are used to support our residents, veterans, their wives and Gold Star mothers.

This year, our lucky winner was Lisa Cormier of Lisa's Barber Shop in Rumford.

  • You must cut budget

    To the Editor:

Mexico's first budget meeting was held on March 21.

It was opened with reference to a letter John Madigan had written to all department heads. The point of the letter was to say more or less, "any itemsd not absolutely necessary to fund your department should be taken out."

  • It isn't right

    To the Editor:

There is never enough time to stop and ask, but I’m sure citizens who pay out of sight property taxes are wondering if the money is being well spent.

It is extremely difficult to get answers to how finances work within town hall. Maybe it is supposed to be that way.

We, as taxpayers, fill the purse and the heads in charge pull the strings. I would simply like to know how $10,000 which we, as voters, approved during a prior town meeting to install/repair the town garage roof got appropriated to a different fund.

  • The Basket Lady

Thanks to the time, effort, and generosity of Barbara Morse, 12 homemade vegetable and fruit quick breads will be added to one of a kind spring baskets along with a set of reversible cloth napkins designed by the penny angel that’ll be delivered to seniors in the community Easter weekend.

  • Thank those who understand

    To the Editor:

If you watch Good Morning, America on NBC, you will know that anchor Robin Roberts has recently been through treatment for a life-threatening disease.

An article this past Easter Sunday in Parade magazine by Meryl Gordon about Roberts’ trial and treatment with her disease noted the following.

  • EASTER EGG DASH

Once again the River Valley Healthy Community Coalition and Ways to Wellness (A Local Healthy Maine Partnership) are sponsoring “free” Off-Premise Responsible Beverage Sales Training from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Mexico Police Department, 3 Recreation Dr. in Mexico. This RBS training is so important because it provides understanding of Maine laws, provides skills necessary to identify intoxicated clientele and minors, and provides business owners the proper tools to implement a successful and responsible policy. It also may lower their insurance rates!
