  • Running for Peru board

    To the Editor:

I decided to run for the two-month term for selectman (in Peru) to help with the transition for any newly elected selectmen and to help get through the 2013-2014 budget process.

I worked at the town office for seven years. During that time, I prepared the warrant articles for the selectmen, filled in the information from the previous year and they came up with the amount to be raised for the year. I attended all the selectmen's budget meetings and the selectmen/Finance Committee budget meetings.

  • Tribute to Laurette Gammon

    To the Editor:

I was sorry to learn of Laurette Gammon’s passing on March 24th. As I was reading her obituary, a flood of nice memories came to mind.

I was a young college kid who came knocking at the door of the old Adult Activity Center at the Old St. Rocco’s Hall on Waldo Street. All I wanted to do was talk to someone who might give me some information about providing supports to adults with disabilities.

  • Vietnam War Rememberance Day Celebration on March 30

RUMFORD -- A Vietnam War Rememberance Day Celebration will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 30 at American Legion Post 24.

For the celebration, remembrance and recognition ceremony, Governor Paul R. LePage will be issuing a special proclamation recognizing Vietnam War Remembrance Day and this 40th Anniversary of all of the troops out of Vietnam. On March 29, 1973, the last of the troops left Vietnam and on March 30, 1973, they were out of Vietnam and returning home.

  • The Basket Lady

In the Good Humor Town, individuals such as Barbara Morse have been in contact with the Basket Lady with an offer to bake some of her delectable quick breads for the annual Easter baskets and two nameless angels left a bowl of chicken stew with dumplings in the entryway for today’s dinner, delish.

  • Hoping the town grants mill request

    To the Editor:

I am writing in regard to the request for the reduction in the tax liability made by the Rumford mill.

I sincerely hope that the selectmen and town manager will have the wisdom to grant this. I fear that if the request is not acted upon favorably that mill management would be forced to make the decision to close the mill forever.

  • American Legion Post 100 news

Congrats to Commander Thurston for another year of service to the American Legion.

  • A birthday plan to honor dad

    To the Editor:

The children of Peter Gallant are planning a party to honor their dad on his 74th birthday.

They would like to invite all of Pete's former little league players as well as all that coached when Pete did. They want to hold it at the little league field, maybe play a short game, and then celebrate with a cookout at the field.

Pete is in Florida now and if possible, they would like to keep this a secret. If anyone has any ideas, names or other information that could help in the celebration, call 562-7830.

Thank you for any help you can be.

  • They were my angels

    To the Editor:
On March 10, 2013, I became very ill at the Mexico Wal-Mart.
I managed to get my groceries into my car but when I got behind the wheel to drive home, I realized I could not drive. I rested my head on the steering wheel for a moment and heard someone knocking on my window.
Two young women stepped into my predicament. They called my friend, drove me home in my car and delivered me safely. I believe they were from Canton.
