Opinion

  • The Basket Lady

In the Good Humor Town, the exceptional weather has magically transformed a hibernating River Valley into a whirlwind of activity as folks meander about just to soak up the warmth of another sunshiny day-smiles all around.

In a recent light hearted conversation with friends, a philosophical question about life emerged, “What’s it all about, Alfie?” Dionne Warwick made a cool million when she sang that song in the 60’s.

  • Ice fishing derby issues

    To the Editor:

The Lions Club Fishing Derby is a success for some but not so for Roxbury Pond camp and property owners.

In the early days, fishing was closed in winter to protect the species for summer fishing. Then pond residents voted to open it. We kept it pristine, pulled our toboggan and packsack and ice chisel as as to not pollute the pond.

  • Cooking

Ah, mud season! Some have said that we’ve had a short winter but we’ll have a very long mud season.

I wouldn’t at all be surprised. Right now, my circular, dirt driveway is one big mud bath. Particularly terrible are two huge puddles at least six inches deep. This will have to be the year we have a couple of loads of gravel spread on this very old driveway.

  • Proud to serve Rumford's wonderful library

    To the Editor:

It was heartening to read a letter to the Times from the trustees of the Rumford Public Library acknowledging the Friends of the Library for their recent emergency purchase of a new refrigerator for the library. The Friends in turn would like to thank the owners of Stanley's for their help with this.

  • LURC reform will cost taxpayers

    To the Editor:

As the elected treasurer of Oxford County, I am opposed to reform proposals to the Land Use Regulation Commission as outlined in the majority report to LD 1798. I attended and testified at the public hearing on the bill in February because the bill poses serious fiscal concerns for taxpayers in Oxford County, and all counties for that matter.

  • Skiers support REACH

    To the Editor:

For the second time, REACH, Oxford County’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services, is the grateful recipient of donations from the Northeast Women’s Cross-Country Day.

This annual event, with almost 150 skiers ages 13 and up, was held on Jan. 29 at the Bethel Inn by the New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) and the Bethel Nordic Ski Center.

NENSA, whose office is located in New Gloucester is the Olympic development organization for cross-country skiing in New England.
