Cooking
Dec 09, 2011 12:00 amFew holiday traditions say Christmas quite like baking cookies. Whether we make cut-out and shaped, decorated, refrigerator, rolled, filled, dropped, pressed or fruity squares, they all have a delicious place in our holidays.
Most of us remember “helping” our moms bake and decorate cookies, or we’ve had the “help” of our children. It was fun, and most of all, the results were delicious.
Colorful and varied cookie gifts are welcomed wherever they are taken, or given, I have discovered.

Wreaths Across America Day
Dec 09, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- On Sat., Dec. 10, members of the River Valley community will gather together to honor veterans during the holiday season as part of the annual Wreaths Across America Day.
Beginning at noon, the 37th Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol has volunteered to conduct the WAA ceremony this year at the Memorial Green in Rumford. Seven ceremonial wreaths will be placed to remember all soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who served, honor their sacrifices, and teach our younger generations about the high cost of our freedoms.
The Basket Lady
Dec 09, 2011 12:00 amI hope everyone had a thankful turkey day; all stuffed, sleep-eyed, trying to stay awake long enough to get through a quarter of football.
In the Good Humor Town, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas even though the thermometer would beg to differ. We’re all thankful for getting the reprieve on our heating oil bills, thus far. The holidays will come, the snow will fall.
The cardinals will alight on the branch of a balsam fir while the squirrels scurry up and down a birch tree; the holidays will come… in perfect time.
Chamber Chatter
Dec 02, 2011 12:00 amI hope everyone had great Thanksgiving. As I stated in last week’s chatter it happens to be my favorite holiday and always has been. Great chance to be with loved ones, eat fantastic food, watch and play football!
The Basket Lady
Dec 02, 2011 12:00 amLet’s start off the day with a reflection thought: Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more.
It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.
Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.

We're here to assist
Dec 02, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
To the lady who lost her son in a confrontation. We all feel your loss. I for one know the PTSD route of war. Being a funny person helps me deal with the hate and shame of war.
PTSD in the extreme is a bad thing for anyone, but we go on. Please remember that the American Legions of Maine can and will help all that need. Rather an older veteran from WWII right up through.
SANTA AND HIS (FIREMEN) ELVES
Dec 02, 2011 12:00 amSANTA AND HIS (FIREMEN) ELVES -- Following the parade Friday evening, Santa exited the sleigh and was escorted by his Elves (Mexico firefighters) to the town gazebo to greet a long line of children, joined by parents armed with cameras. Blowing in the wind
Dec 02, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Record Hill Wind has a direct stake in its success by way of the taxpayers to the tune of $6.6 million per year based on taxpayer subsidy of $53 per megawatt hour times 125,000 annual megawatt hours of production.
They must have felt the generosity of this taxpayer gift when they offered a free 500 kilowatt/hours of electricity to every resident in Roxbury.

Commander's Corner
Dec 02, 2011 12:00 amThe commander elect, Bryan Lucas, has resigned due to health problems and I have inherited the position until April.
We wish Bryan best of luck and a speedy recovery. Just a quick recap of the Veteran Day events. The turnout of area veterans at MVHS was pretty good, but I know there are a lot more veterans out there. The flag folding ceremony was conducted by Fred Milligan the Post’s Americanism Officer, assisted by Dane Curato and SSGT Corey Heinzen.
