Opinion

  • Learn what "We the People" really means

    To the Editor:

I was leaving Hannaford in Rumford Saturday night and I hear a voice behind me say, "I guess you have an opinion!"

I turned around and said, "what are you talking about?"

He proceeded to explain to me why having the words "Don't tread on me!" written on the back window of my Subaru was actually treading on America. I asked why and he said that putting that on a Subaru and not buying an American car was treading on our nation.

  • Wreaths Across America Day

RUMFORD -- Next month, members of the River Valley community will gather together to honor veterans during the holiday season as part of the annual Wreaths Across America Day.

The 37th Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol has volunteered to conduct the WAA ceremony this year at the Memorial Green in Rumford at noon on Saturday, Dec. 10. Seven ceremonial wreaths will be placed to remember all soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who served, honor their sacrifices, and teach our younger generations about the high cost of our freedoms.

  • Cooking

The Wednesday night before Thanksgiving is usually an incredibly busy time for those who are hosting the traditional big meal.

There are pies to bake, vegetables to peel, dressing to prepare for stuffing the turkey the next morning (NOT before!) and a myriad of other cooking-related tasks.

When the day arrives, and all the guests, chances are all the burners on the stove and the oven are busy cooking potatoes, squash, gravy, and seemingly dozens of other foods. It’s on Thanksgiving that I wish I had another stove, or at least another oven.

  • The Basket Lady

The Thanksgiving holiday is just around the corner and I’m eagerly anticipating the biggest feast of the year.

Right now, I can imagine the smells of oven baked stuffed turkey, carved on a platter with a side of mashed potatoes, plump, hot, yeast rolls soaked in butter, a dollop of cranberry sauce and for dessert, a choice of homemade pumpkin or apple pie topped with ice cream and chocolate sauce.

Finally, the last minute hubbubs have settled down and folks gather around the table to eat, eat and eat some more.

  • Is your derriere drooping dearie?

    To the Editor:

Well, is it? Is your tush toppling? Is your rear end rearranging itself? Is your bottom bottoming out?

Is your gluteus maximums descending instead of ascending? Is anyone following you reminded of, "Swing and sway with Sammy Kaye."

Well, never fear, help is on the way. Liposuction? Nope. Cosmetic surgery? Nope. Nineteenth century corsets? Nope. There's a better and much less expensive way to alleviate the onslaught of The Eventual. It's called exercise.

  • The Chamber Chatter

History states that only five women Pilgrims survived the first year at the Plymouth settlement and they were the first ones to cook and prepare the first meager celebration meal, in 1621. Journals say the celebration lasted three days! This is personally my favorite holiday. Do you know the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade began in 1924? When my kids were at home (a little after 1924), it was tradition for all of us to get up and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

  • Care packages a vital part of hope

    To The Editor:

You're correct Mrs. Richard. I am very proud to serve our new veterans, both home and abroad.

We are very pleased and honored to serve those that now defend the American way. I, for one, served our country for two years in the Republic of Vietnam, the war that people dislike to remember. No one knows the feelings of a veteran anymore than the ones that served in any war.

  • Remaining Legion auctions cancelled

    To the Editor:

We apologize to everyone out there, but to no fault of our own, the Toy & Tool and Gift auctioneer has cancelled out all remaining Friday auctions.

It has come to our attention that not enough people were attending the auctions because of being a lower economy area.

The gentlemen did say at each auction he would be here, rain, snow, blizzard or whatever. Post 100 is trying to bring things to you.

  • A BLAST FROM THE PAST

A BLAST FROM THE PAST -- At Veterans Day ceremonies held in Rumford Friday, much of the topic regarded veterans serving in the Vietnam War. In keeping with that theme, several members of the Mountain Valley High School band, along with the Band Director Michael Prescott and MVHS Principal Matthew Gilbert, performed a song many veterans heard often during that war, "Born on the Bayou," by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Students taking part included Erich Zurhorst, Alex Witas, Jon Petrie, Tyler Smith, Nicholas Williams, Victoria Gordon and Ashleigh Milligan. (Times photo by Bruce Farrin)
