Voter says "yes" on Rumford wind ordinance
Oct 28, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
By voting "yes" on the Rumford wind ordinance, you will help protect Rumford citizens from the same fate that has plagued others in Maine living near industrial wind projects and who let the state make their decisions for them. The select board worked hard on this ordinance to ensure protection for the town and its residents while also being mindful of landowner’s rights. They did this while trying to reach a consensus every step of the way.
A "no" vote on the third Rumford wind ordinance
Oct 28, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The third Rumford wind facility ordinance is completed for a November vote.
I recommend for the citizens to check the language of this third ordinance for the town website or get a copy at the town office.
This ordinance has many negative items towards a wind facility locating in Rumford. If this ordinance is accepted, it would be a "no" vote for any wind power facility locating in Rumford.
The anti-wind people I believe accept the New England power sources now in effect producing over 50 percent of these emissions.
An opportunity for harness racing
Oct 28, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
During the many years of my teaching career in Massachusetts, I found the summers the ideal time to pursue my dream of being a harness driver.
After launching a neophyte training approach from Rockingham to Foxboro, I headed to Maine in the early '70s. Here I met a number of horsemen who today know they retain my highest regard for them because of the way they treated a "part-timer," as it were. I succeeded in getting a license and considered my self a decent driver, trainer, owner for years to come.
About the Legacy Foundation
Oct 28, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The Legacy Foundation and the Homeless Veterans of Maine will be receiving a good donation this year.
The Legacy Foundation is a fund which helps children of veterans who don't make it home. We, the American Legion Riders of Maine, are proud to say we have contributed to this foundation for a few years now.
This past summer, the rally in Winthrop gained some funds and we, as a Legion Rider community, raised $15,000 for this foundation.

You cannot do it on your own. You will need the help of others -- if you want to be successful. And that will require you to connect with others. To do that, follow these suggestions:
Focus on people.
Be likable.
Show others that you care.
Remember everyone’s name.
Walk slowly through the crowd.
Be generous.

Oct 21, 2011 12:00 amIn the Good Humor Town, autumn has never looked more vibrant even when the dreary rain sneaks in to interrupt the glorious days that we’ve enjoyed over the long weekend.
The school of life is in session; sit up straight and tall, pay close attention to its lessons.
In the meanwhile, here’s a little bit more about the ABC’s of faith (not so much about the birds and the bees).
Give to one from whom you will not receive. Hope. Instruct.
Support for proposed Rumford wind facility ordinance
Oct 21, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Rumford Board of Selectman and the town manager for the committed effort in producing the Rumford wind facility ordinance.
Under the leadership of the board chair, respect was show for all members of the board and the citizens of the River Valley in its development.
Their goal was to protect the health and well being of the citizens of the Town of Rumford first and foremost, including the rights of a participating landowner.
Tax revenue from Record Hill
Oct 21, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Recently, a question asked at a Roxbury select board meeting concerned expected tax revenue from the Record Hill wind project.
This project was approved by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Within the permit, the developers states at least $700,000 per year would be allocated to the town, using current town budget numbers. The mil rate would drop from nearly $20 per thousand dollar evaluation to about $6 per thousand dollar evaluation.
A "yes" vote on Rumford wind energy facility ordinance
Oct 21, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
On Tuesday, November 8th, Rumford citizens will have a third and most likely the last opportunity to vote for a wind energy facility ordinance. In a spirit of compromise, the selectpersons developed, unanimously supported, and approved this ordinance.
The health, safety, and welfare of all Rumford citizens were paramount in the creation of this ordinance.
The WEF Ordinance has incorporated some information from the prior two ordinances and also new language on noise, setbacks, shadow flicker, decommissioning, and community benefits has been added.
