Success for all
Aug 12, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Maine is the proud home of many hard working, successful people: dedicated teachers and coaches who inspire our kids; caring nurses and doctors who comfort our sick and elderly; resourceful fisherman and farmers who feed us; independent loggers who help shelter us; creative artists who enrich our everyday lives; and loving parents who raise our next generation of Mainers.
Unfortunately, what Maine does not have are enough high wage earning residents. That’s a big economic and job problem for our state.
Cooking
Aug 12, 2011 12:00 amAugust is the month for blueberries, one of the healthiest fruits or vegetables available, packed with loads of anti-oxidents. And here in Western Maine, we are fortunate that several local people harvest the tiny wild blueberry from their lands.
The cultivated berries, growing on high bushes, are great for munching on, but for cooking, nothing beats the flavor of a Maine wild blueberry.
Issues with board meetings, media coverage

I went to a recent Peru selectmen's meeting with a plan to make a few simple suggestions about corrections that needed to make the minutes of the week before factually accurate and complete.
After the selectmen made the corrections, I would sit quietly and wait until the public comment session, make few statements about the Maine Freedom of Access Act, get the name of the attorney for the Town of Peru, and leave.
Fear that Beacon House could close
Aug 05, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I've been one of the people going to the Beacon House since it was started in the late 1980's.
It's called the Beacon House because it stood as a beacon of light from heaven shining over the people of the Beacon House.
However, from the time the founder left, the Beacon House has changed.
There used to be a lot of activities with involvement from many clubs from around the region. But it's really dwindled down. Many of those clubs are no longer involved.
The Basket Lady
Aug 05, 2011 12:00 amIn the Good Humor Town, the Basket Lady spotted Dave Duguay in his dark blue pickup truck coming up the hill on Lincoln Avenue. I had just crossed the street when he stopped to turn left on Waldo. We were waving to each other like two people drowning in the middle of a river. The last time that I saw him was over a year ago.
I walked about a half block, when I realized that the surprise gift that I had for him was in my hand. Quickly, I looked over my shoulder, saw Dave was still waiting to turn and started running toward his truck; calling his name.

A step back in time

I was just getting ready to rest in my Boston rocker when I spotted my 1949 telephone book. I picked it up and began to go through the yellow pages once again and this time, restaurants caught my eye.

Time to move on

The ad hoc committee appointed by the Rumford Selectmen for direction on a wind turbine ordinance had their ordinance voted down by citizens.
The Rumford selectmen then redrafted the wind turbine ordinance which citizens also voted down.
I would think good old Maine common sense tells us it’s time to put this dead-end controversy behind us and focus our time and energy on other serious problems.
Tom Fallon,
Rumford
You belong to me

"See the pyramids along the Nile,
Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle,
Just remember darling all the while,
You belong to me.
See the marketplace in old Algiers,
Send me photographs and souvenirs,
Just remember when a dream appears,
You belong to me.
Fly the ocean in a silver plane,
See the jungle when it's wet with rain,
Just remember till you're home again,
You belong to me."
