Mar 08, 2013 12:00 amMaple time!
Look closely as you drive down some back roads and you might see old-fashioned buckets or plastic milk jugs hung from maple trees lining the road, or maple trees connected by tubes that empty directly into the nearby sap boiling house.
Late winter and early spring warm days and cool nights cause sap to rise in most trees, but it’s the slightly sweet maple sap that so many people prize.

Fix those massive pot holes
Mar 08, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The towns of Rumford and Mexico should be ashamed for allowing the downtown roads to get to the point of disrepair.
You have to drive like you're on an obstacle course to avoid these massive pot holes.
Maybe there's not enough money to put hot pack in the pot holes, but gravel doesn't cost that much.
For safety sake, please take care of this severe problem before someone blows a tire and causes an accident.

The Basket Lady
Mar 01, 2013 12:00 amBasket Lady received an e-mail from Jonathan Berkleigh, enjoying life somewhere in the great Sunshine state that praised the book, “When We Were The Kennedy’s,” a memoir written by Monica Wood, who grew up in Mexico. Yep, it’s a small world after all.
Jonathan wrote, “The Roche/Wood families were from Prince Edward Island originally, and the author’s aunt Rose Roche, visited with my mother quite often.” His mother of course, is the late Dot Sanchas.

Peru citizen reacts to select board issues
Mar 01, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Peru citizens -- Correspondence found from MMA at the end of June 2012 clearly shows that Kathy Hussey has stayed in the position of select person to the board for the Town of Peru unethically.
Peru selectmen gives self-assessment
Mar 01, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
When I ran for selectman in 2009, I ran with the intent to represent the townspeople and do what was best for our community.
When I first began my term, I was new. I kind of sat back and tried to understand why things were done the way they were. I listened and thought that since the other members had been in office longer than me, I thought they knew what they were doing.
Peru’s sad facts
Mar 01, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I write to express my concerns for the Town of Peru. I have been a public servant for most of my life and for the past 25 years have given my heart and soul to the Peru Fire Department as have many other good Peruvians.
It is important that the people know why I helped circulate recall petitions for Selectmen Dick Powell and Ed Ferland.
The truth in Peru
Mar 01, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
As a citizen who has attended many of the weekly board meetings, I feel it is time to get the correct information out to the citizens before they vote on March 4.
Many misconceptions, accusations and incorrect facts are floating around. All of the problems could have been avoided from the start in June 2012. Tim Holland, chair of the board, should have upheld the ordinance and made Mrs. Hussey choose -- either step down as a select person, or resign from the position of secretary to the board. It's as simple as that.
