The Basket Lady
Aug 19, 2011 12:00 amI guess the news or should I say the mail, has been postmarked for our Tony Glazer to be allocated to another postal distribution site. We’re going to miss his cheerful voice, smiling face and humor. Go get ‘em, Tony!
Dot Sanchas used to say, "Miracles happen every day. All you need to do is just ask."
Monday afternoon on a casual walk to the Rumford Post Office, Peggy Hanley came up to me and asked if I could make up a welcome basket for a new Rumford resident who’s in need of washcloths, towels, sheets, soap/shampoo and dishes.

The clouds of government
Aug 19, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The challenges to the people of Dixfield continue to rapidly mount, the increasing costs of living seem endless, chomping away at earnings that seem never to keep pace and for too many, earnings that are declining and without the certainty they will be there tomorrow.

Be part of the solution

Here in Dixfield, we have a man who is a genius. He has all the answers to the problems our town is having, plus many of the problems the towns surrounding us as well.
Why he is wasting that knowledge is beyond me. Why not become a selectman, join the planning boards, finance committee, economic development committee or any organization that looks to make the town better? He seems to have the time to attend all the meetings but waits till the decision are made and then criticizes them.
Doing the right thing
Aug 19, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
On Friday, Aug. 5, I had my car washed at Big Daddy's in Mexico.
As I was paying for my services, I dropped a large sum of money that was folder from my pocket onto the floor.
After I left, the owner, Daniel Frazel, tracked me down to say they had found my money.
In this day and age, it's truly wonderful to still have faith that there are people who still are honest and want to do the right thing.

The select boards of Carthage, Dixfield, Roxbury, Rumford, Woodstock and Canton have been snookered into embracing wind power projects. Recent events should awaken them from their dream world, or will it ?
Governor LePage comments on wind turbines:
"They are doing an awful lot of damage to our quality of life, our mountains," he said. "I don't think it's going to lower the cost of energy. I think in 10 years we're going to be like Sweden and Denmark and we're going to be swearing at ourselves."

Giving credit to the Beacon House
Aug 12, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I'm taking time today to give a well-known place in our community the credit it deserves.
The Beacon House has been a source of comfort and friendship over the years.
Four years ago, when my sister passed away, the Beacon House and their members were there to help take my mind off my sorrow.
Ever since then, I go to the Beacon House to play pool, chat, and share meals with their members.
We have a manager, Cheryl McLean, who helps anyone with rides, hospital visits and cheering people up.
The Basket Lady
Aug 12, 2011 12:00 amIn the Good Humor Town, numerous individuals in the River Valley have shown a kindness- just by the single act of being kind.
Our dear Dot Sanchas, who loved to cook and bake, wrote the Kindness Counts column for the Rumford Falls Times, and always included one of her classic recipes.
I walked over to her house one afternoon and there she was, standing at the kitchen counter humming to herself with flour all over the counter, floor and her hands. She was making a wedding cake for some lucky couple. Her silver hair and apron were covered in flour and batter.
Dysfunctional government signs
Aug 12, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Can you imagine someone actually wrote this in a national publication: "The U.S. government is not broken; it is dysfunctional."
You don't have to go to the federal level to see a dysfunctional government at work. We have plenty of that right here in the River Valley area.
Consider: Dixfield overwhelmingly voted in a wind moratorium for the express purpose of creating an ordinance to recognize public health and safety concerns. The voters were never given anything to vote on. Here's your sign, Dixfield selectmen.
