Fiscal responsibility starts at home
Apr 22, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The theme for this year’s budget season in Rumford is fear.
If you cut any money from the Rumford Fire Department, lives will be lost. If you don’t approve the huge Rumford Police Department budget, the streets will be unsafe to walk. If you don’t vote for a return to wasteful spending on welfare, there will be people starving to death.
The goal is to scare you the voter into thinking that safety requires big spending in little Rumford Maine. Let’s take a look.
We'll only have ourselves to blame
Apr 22, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I am a summer resident of your beautiful town and I would like to commend the small band of patriots who have been working tirelessly for the past three years to prevent the citizens of Rumford and the surrounded towns from cutting their own throats.
I refer to the ongoing struggle to oppose the demolition of your beautiful mountain tops, and the imposition thereon on hundreds of mammouth (420 to 502 feet tall) wind turbines. This is not a Rumford or a Roxbury problem.
Thanks for supporting gardening project

Dear Rumford and Mexico 80's Super Reunion Committee:
As the gardening season is starting we wanted to thank you so much for your generous donation to the Mountain Valley Middle School gardening project.
We run on donations and what money we can raise by selling some of our produce, so a gift out of the blue is wonderful. The money will help us maintain and grow the garden, benefiting all of our students.
Check out our progress at http://mvmsgarden.wordpress.com/.

Return the labor union mural
Apr 22, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Why is the labor union mural Gov. LePage had taken from the Maine Department of Labor so important?
The mural is about the fight against injustice by Maine working people. The mural presents recorded history.
In Maine history, human beings who worked in mills believed they were not slaves even though they were treated like slaves by their managements. The workers believed they were human beings and should be treated like human beings. In other words, they believed in their inherent, or God-given, human dignity.
The Basket Lady
Apr 22, 2011 12:00 amRecently, I watched a televised event held in the Portland area that recognized “everyday heroes” and I was impressed by how similar each recipients words were as they stood at the podium to address the audience after accepting their award; “I did so and so because it was the right thing to do.”
Well, in the Good Humor Town, there’s a man that goes by the name of Fred Stone and for the life of me, I just want to call him Fred Flintstone.

The Holy Savior School would like to extend their sincere appreciation and gratitude to all the wonderful supporters, auction patrons, contributors and parishioners that participated in our recent auction, which was held on April 8th at the 49 Franklin in Rumford.
A special thank you to “Auctioneer” Mark Prevost for his professionalism and humor, he always makes the night with his quick wit. An enormous thank you goes to Cindy and Scott Grassette at 49 Franklin for serving our every need.
The Basket Lady
Apr 15, 2011 12:00 am“Ah,” a day resplendent with rays of sunshine; and how we do so need that boost of nature’s positivity right now.
Let’s delve right into a “symbolic” basket of perfection.
I’d like to share a poem written by Virginia Borman Grimmer that eloquently expresses what Perfection is to her, so enjoy.
Perfection
God put perfection in the rose,
The tiny baby’s sweet pink toes;
He pressed it in the lilac bloom
With rare perfume to grace a room.
God put perfection in the skies
Thanks for supporting Daffodil Days
Apr 15, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I would like to extend my appreciation to the people of the River Valley and Bethel communities for another great daffodil season.
Thanks to the businesses and individuals who pre-ordered bouquets, bears and potted plants. And a very special thank you to the many volunteers who worked on wrapping, direct selling and delivery of the hundreds of yellow gifts of hope.
None of this could have been achieved without the tireless effort of our area coordinators -- Caroline Gould, Judy Broomhall, Lorraine Nadeau and Ruby Kulpa.
Wind power is fiscally responsible

I am writing to correct some of the inaccurate and misleading statements in Mr. McKay’s recent letter to the editor, entitled “Wind is a fiscal disaster.”
