Young firefighter raising funds for national competition
May 13, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
My name is Myriah Porter. I am a junior at Dirigo High School as well as a student in Firefighter I and 2 class at Foster Tech Center in Farmington.
I've been volunteering with the Peru Fire Department for five years and have been active for three years.
On March 10-11, I competed in a statewide Skills USA competition for firefighting. I placed first in the state, giving me a change to compete nationally on June 20-25 in Kansas City, MO. In order to compete in the Nationals, I need to raise $1,200.
When is a loan not a loan?

When is a loan not a loan?
At a recent Dixfield special town meeting designed to overthrow the will of the people and acquire a $100,000 loan for sewer work, we heard this loan would cost nothing and sewer rates would not be increased. One man even stated that this is a “no-brainer” for if it costs nothing, then let’s vote for the loan.
So, whereas in November 2010, the voters turned down the loan, by clever manipulation, the officials overturned the people’s vote.
The age of dupe
May 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The age of dupe has set hold in America and our local government officials have led themselves right into it.
All government from federal, state and local powers are but one melting pot, feeding each other with ideas to extract more and more from the taxpayer.
Energy policy: Look to the future!
May 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Unfortunately, our local, state and federal officials appear to lack an energy policy vision for the future. The headlines seem to glorify wind and solar while demonizing natural gas, oil, coal and nuclear-powered electrical energy generation.
Strangely, the use of hydrogen as a future fuel to power homes and vehicles is rarely discussed. Instant gratification seems to be the chosen philosophy of operation.
Thanks for posting my story

Note of thanks To Rumford Hospital
May 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
A recent fall at home necessitated a stay at the Rumford Hospital.
I was very impressed with the care I received there. Before I even entered the emergency room, there was a woman just getting to work that saw my need and ran inside to get a wheel chair. Every doctor, nurse, C.N.A., clinician, technician, secretary, clerk, and volunteer I had contact with treated me and my family with the utmost respect, gentleness, courtesy and care.
I consider myself very fortunate to have such a fine hospital so near. You are all in my prayers, thank you all!
Transformation into "Turbine Valley" has begun
May 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The hills above Ellis Pond are alive with explosions, gouging of ancient earth, and soon the colossal appearance of the new environmentalist’s symbols of global resurrection. As the little girl says, “They’re back!"
In the beginning, a former governor and a former TV executive brought promises of riches to the good community and by a whooping margin of seven votes, the start of the transformation of the River Valley to “Turbine Valley" had begun.
Cut the cancerous Rumford budget
May 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
After spending over 40 years doing anesthesia in the operating room, I have observed a great deal of cancer surgery.
When the cancer reaches the point that no other treatment will stop it, the doctor has to cut it out. Well, in my opnion, Rumford's budget is full of cancer and the voters need to cut it out.
The Basket Lady
May 06, 2011 12:00 amIn the Good Humor Town; lively human beings could be seen out walking up and down Congress Street in Rumford.
I saw people that I haven’t seen in years downtown and maybe that’s because the sun was shining, birds were singing and I heard a man whistling a tune about letting the sunshine in.
How refreshing to experience being outdoors moving about in the warm sunshine, filled with the hope that spring has arrived at last.
