An everyday hero
May 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Recently, Mitzi Sequoia wrote about everyday heroes in her Basket Lady column, and presented Fred Stone, our caretaker at the Concord Apartment, with a basket.
Fred is always there for all 27 apartment occupants on the clock or off. Need a job done, leave a note on his office door, and the job gets done. We can call him any time day or night.
Thanks for supporting Eagles Friday Nite Jam
May 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I would like to thank everyone involved in the Eagles Friday Nite Jam. We have just completed our ninth winter.
When I got the opportunity to keep the jam going, after Gene Towle's retirement, I never thought it would be going this many years and have been veiwed by so many. It is very gratifying to meet people on the street, some of whom I don't even know, to express their appreciation for this comunity event.
“No” sends major message
Apr 29, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The tax paying citizens of Rumford must step up to the plate once and for all when going to the polls this year.
Those voting absentee must remember also to go back a second time to vote on the RSU 10 budget.
In all cases a “no"is warranted across the board this year. Mr. Theriault said it correctly last week in his letter to the editor. The population of the entire town is now less 6000. The majority of the tax payers are on fixed incomes. But town management as a whole has not fathomed that yet.
Update From Augusta
Apr 29, 2011 12:00 amGetting Our Facts Straight
The River Valley leads the way in many different areas -- not just in football and wrestling. We are somewhat an epicenter for land based wind energy development in Maine. There is something about the area that has made it attractive to grid scale wind developers with projects having been proposed in a number of communities within the River Valley including Byron, Roxbury and Rumford. The proposed projects are in various stages of planning, permitting and development -- and the road thus far has not been a particularly straight path.

The Basket Lady
Apr 29, 2011 12:00 amI finally got to meet Mr. Fred Stone, a genuine everyday hero and now I know why so many of the residents at the Concorde Apartments think so highly of him.
Fred Stone is clearly a giver and he gives the very best of gifts, himself. Thank you for a job well done, Fred!
I had a wonderfully brief visit with Barbara (good friend of Dot Benedix and Dot Sanchas); and she shared that she put together a comfort basket that really brought a ray of sunshine to a lady recently.
The monologues of women’s stories
Apr 29, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Women and girls have a right to be safe – seems like a fairly straightforward and reasonable statement. Unfortunately, not all people support this right. Around the world, and in Oxford County, Maine, it is estimated that at least one in three females experience sexual or physical violence, most often by a person known to them.
Chamber Chatter
Apr 29, 2011 12:00 amThings are looking up. The weather is getting better, the Red Sox are starting to get some pitching and timely hitting and I had a chance to hit some dimpled spheres at the driving range!
