Postal service concerns
Mar 11, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I would like to address this letter to all who care about the Dixfield Post Office as much as I do. I realize that the postal service is going through rough times like the rest of society, but I want to present my concerns.
The talk around the many surrounding towns is that the carriers out of the Dixfield office is going to be moved up to the Rumford Post Office. What is going to happen after that?
Something is rotten in the Kingdom of Denmark (Shakespeare)

At the Thursday, Feb. 24 wind ordinance workshop, for those of us who are familiar with the issues, having to listen to the unfounded and unchallenged rantings of Mr.Belanger was quite disheartening.
For Mr. Sterling to think that Mr. Rand, a board certified acoustician, is biased, is the most idiotic statment I ever heard in a longtime.
The Chamber Chatter
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amI hope everyone has recovered from the latest storm! Right now I am thinking of the spring/summer because we are planning the seasonal activities now and are getting organized.
The Easter egg hunt is coming up soon and some of the volunteers are sorting the ducks for the upcoming summer duck races.
Support the Rumford Library
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
As a regular patron of the Rumford Public Library, I am very concerned by the severe cuts to its budget in recent years: 10 percent in 2008-09, another 10 percenrt in 2009-10 and a 20 percent cut in the fiscal year of 2010-11.
This gem of a library, and its staff, are not fully appreciated by many in town. If you do not have a card or do not take out books, videos or magazines, your are missing a delightful way to spend some of your recreation time.
School budget increases while people are losing jobs

The Western Regional School Unit 10 could be losing about $1.2 million in federal aid.
In the 2010-11 budget, RSU 10 received about $700,000 in stimulus money, which was to be used to help schools downsize and adjust their budgets.
Lariviere led by example
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
I read with great interest the piece in last week's Times regarding the Lariviere Oncology contribution from "Paperboy."
The person you call "Paperboy" had contacted me a couple of weeks ago and told me that he had made a contribution and why.
I wish to add, without attribution, our "two-cents", literally. My wife and I will be making an anonymous contribution for all the same reasons stated in the article.Education is lifeblood of our economy
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
As a teacher, I notice every day how my community supports the educators of RSU 10 from Rumford to Buckfield.
What may not be as obvious is the fact that educators support the businesses of our community to the same extent. As any educator will attest, we spend about 90 percent of our salary in community grocery stores, at community gas stations, in local auto shops, clothing stores, and restaurants. Educators purchase heating oil, furniture, hardware, and local produce, all from our neighbors’ businesses.
Developing the "right" wind ordinance
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
Kudos to Terry Karkos and Eileen Adams for their efforts in being there whenever a wind agenda is taking place in the River Valley. Good reporting leads to good debate.
Rumford’s wind committee meeting not only created heated exchanges on the good and bad of wind, but it revealed the frustration involved in creating the "right" ordinance.

The Basket Lady
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amIn the Good Humor Town, It’s a joy to give someone a basket and for the people who know me, they’ve heard me say it repeatedly.
The joy is followed by “happy” laughter, especially when the person asks, “What’s the rules, do I have to give a basket to someone, how much time do I get before I do and can I give a basket to just anyone?”
My happy laughter is because the person who's asking the questions is thinking about doing a kindness for other(s) without realizing the power of their thoughts.
