Western Mountain Cal Ripken League opens
RIVER VALLEY -- The 2013 season of the Western Mountain Cal Ripken Baseball League opened this week with games in both the Minor Leagues and Major Leagues.
Each division will have seven teams from local towns, made up of players from Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield, Peru, Carthage, Canton, Rumford Point, Andover, Roxbury and Byron. The league opened Monday and they will play to June 22, with a day long playoff format that Saturday. This will be followed by championship games on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Playoffs are expected to be at the Mexico Rec Park, with a day long round robin event on May 18 in Rumford.
The Minor League program is similar to the former GRCC Farm League with boys and girls ages 6-10 competing and learning the game of baseball. With the division being a developmental program, this year teams will have players pitch the first two innings and coaches pitch the last four. Entries from Rumford are UMO (Coach Venessa Bartlett) and UMA (Coach Colleen Calden) and are overseen by GRCC program director Bob Anderson and league rep Dan Garbarini. Mexico has two teams, the Explorers (Coach Ray Lyons) and the Lions (Coach Scot New) and is overseen by River Valley Rec and program director Wayne Sevigny. Dixfield has three teams, the Red Hawks (Coach Chris Little), the Blue Diamonds(Coach Joe Bryant) and the Green Monsters (Coach Erin Smith) and is overseen by Dixfield Rec and program director Don St. Germaine and league rep Joe Bryant.
The Major League program is similar to the former GRCC Little League, with players ages 9-12 competing. This program is intended to be competitive and develop players for future middle school and high school teams. In addition to the regular season, this division will also sponsor four all-star teams, ages 9-12, that will compete in regional and state tournaments at the end of the season. Rumford has three teams this year, DARE (Coach Anthony Davis), Western Maine Insurance (Coach Phil Mills) and Oxford Federal Credit Union (Coach Dan Garbarini). Mexico is represented by Dupuis Salvage (Coach Wayne Sevigny). Dixfield has two teams, A's (Coach Scot Holmes) and the Red Sox (Coach Don St. Germaine). All programs are overseen by their appropriate town rec departments. Peru is not having a team this year, but is participating with Dixfield. The town field is still being used and are represented by in the League by Pat and Roxanne Gorham. Roxanne will head the concessions and fundraising for the league. Eddie Paterson (league president) will oversee the umpires. For a schedule of games, coaching information and phone numbers, contact the GRCC.
