Chisholm Ski Club banquet held

These students participated in the Nordic Ski development program last summer with Bailey and will be participating again this summer. Bailey, a member of the Maine Winter Sports Nordic Ski Team, has competed on the national level.
RUMFORD -- The Chisholm Ski Club held the annual Volunteer and Ski Team Appreciation Banquet at Black Mountain Lodge on May 19.
Volunteers were thanked for their many hours of dedication to hosting alpine and nordic races at Black Mountain. Ski Team
members from the Mountain Valley and Dirigo high schools and middle school alpine and Nordic Ski Teams were honored for
representing the River Valley in skiing competition throughout the state.
Carlie Casey, Chisholm Ski Club Board member, spoke about the recent grant awarded to the Chisholm Ski Club and Black Mountain for trail maintenance/upgrading and how the club needs to match the $36,000 of funding with 800 hours of volunteer time by December 31, 2013.
Fred Bailey, Andover native and Maine Winter Sports Center athlete spoke of the summer nordic training program at Black Mountain that he will be coaching for the second year. Fred also noted that the afterschool Nordic ski program in the River Valley area had over 100 elementary school students on Nordic skis this winter.
Josh Firman, regional director of the Maine Winter Sports Center Healthy Hometown Coalition, and Jill Bartash, spoke of the success of the Chisholm Ski Club Youth Nordic Development program that was held at Black Mountain this year on Sunday afternoons to promote skiing to the younger children in the River Valley area.
The banquet ended with Chisholm Ski Club pins awarded to local ski team members and plaques given to Connor Woods of Mountain Valley High School for winning the Maine Class C State Skimiester competition and to Katie Collette of Mountain Valley for winning the Maine Class C State Giant Slalom Championship.
