Kane to be inducted into NE Hall of Fame
Former Dirigo basketball coach Gavin Kane will be inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame on June 22.
Gavin Kane put his heart and soul into the Dirigo basketball programs and the coaching successes are well known statewide, however, those attributes will be recognized at the next level.
The current Spruce Mountain girls' coach will be inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. The induction ceremonies will be held Saturday, June 22 at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA.
Kane was a fixture on the Dirigo sidelines. In 1994, he took control of the girls' program and built it into a dynasty until 2005. He guided the Cougar boys' program four seasons and it also became a contender in both the Mountain Valley Conference and statewide.
Kane was revered after coaching Rangeley boys to 1989 state championship and at Dirigo, the girls ran off an unprecedented string of wins and titles; 12 consecutive MVC crowns, 11 Western Regional (1995-2005) and six state championships. When Kane left Dirigo, he had a coaching record of 263-17, including MVC win streaks of 124 and 136 games.
The draw of coaching at the Division I level lured Kane to break ties with the Cougars and join the University of Maine coaching staff. Kane has been at Spruce Mountain the past two seasons and his career record is 483-98.
Kane is a no-nonsense coach who demanded strict discipline and the players bought in to this philosophy. Dirigo’s trademark man-to-man defense became legendary because the opposition simply couldn’t handle the pressure; resulting in countless baskets off its relentless transition game.
During the run, the Class C Cougars became a model for other programs to try and attain. The Dirigo teams displayed a strong competitiveness by seeking-out, playing and beating all-comers, regarding of Class.
Kane coached both the Dirigo boys' and girls' teams for one season. The boys were 74-10, including three-straight appearances in the regional finals. In ‘09, the Cougars won their first championship since 1983. Dirigo teams compiled a 40-3 record, in regional games at the Augusta Civic Center during Kane's tenure.
Kane has been recognized numerous times by his peers with Maine Association of Basketball Coaches and MVC Coach of Year Awards. Many of Kane's former student-athletes played at the collegiate level and have continued in the coaching profession.
