Red Sox over A's in title battle of Dixfield teams
RUMFORD -- The Red Sox of Dixfield pulled together to win the Little League championship in the River Valley. A triple by Chase Thebarge sparked a late rally, scoring four runs in the sixth inning, which proved enough as the Red Sox won 6-3 against the Dixfield Athletics in the clinching second game.
The best-of-three title series began the prior evening with the Red Sox winning 5-3. The Athletics led 3-2 entering the sixth and utilized strategy as Kyle Swett came in to close the game, replacing starter Noah Brown. The Red Sox welcomed the change of pace with Thebarge leading off with a triple and Ethan Bryant made it back-to-back triples to drive-in Thebarge. Bryce Whittemore walked and Dalton Berry doubled to scored Ethan Bryant with the eventual winning run.
The onslaught continued with Mason Coriveau single scored Whittemore and a fielder's choice by Bryce Wilton capped off the scoring. The A's scored their three runs in the first as Nate Child singled, followed by a pair of RBI triples by Noah Brown and Swett followed. Jarrett MacIssac added an RBI fielder's choice
Brown, who pitched five innings, allowed two runs, 6 hits, 7 Ks, and six walks. Swett took the loss, allowing four hits and four runs. The winning pitcher was Thebarge (six innings, 3 runs, 6 hits, 5 K, one walk). The Red Sox jumped on Brown for two runs in the first, Thebarge led off with a double and Bryant hit an RBI single. Whittemore singled and raced home on an RBI single by Coriveau. There was drama when Bryant was called out at the plate by umpire Ryan Palmer for not sliding and the subsequent collision. The rules don't require sliding but the runner must avoid contact.
In the opening game of the championship, Coriveau pitched 6 innings, had 12 strike outs, five hits and three runs for the win.
The Red Sox scored in the first and third innings to lead 4-0. Bryant walked and Whittemore singled, with Berry drilling a two-run double. Coriveau singled to drive in Berry. In the third, Whittemore led off with double, and scored on Coriveau's fielders choice.
Red Sox scored a run in the fifth as Whittemore led off with a single and scored on a Coriveau sac fly. Swett struck out 10 in the loss.
A's scratched across a run in the fourth and two in sixth, Swett singled and scored on a fielders choice by Nate Child. In the sixth, Swett singled, two sox errors and a single by Jarrett MacIssac.
