Rumford wins softball league
OXFORD -- The Rumford Senior League girls summer softball team took home top honors under the lights on August 6th at Pismo Beach in Oxford, ending their summer league play in the Oxford Hills Softball League.
Coached by Brian Mills, teams have been competing in this league for over 15 years from Farm Team on up through Senior League. Assisting Mills was Bob Laubauskas and Gary Dolloff.
In the season finale, it was the first time in history of playing in this league that Rumford Senior League had advanced to the championship as the northern representatives. Experience of playing was not an issue for these girls as Rumford’s Ali Carlton sparked her team against a very competitive Hebron Minot team, who had overcome Lewiston to be represent the Southern League in the championship game.
Several outstanding outfield catches by Carlton and heads-up baserunning resulted in errors that allowed Ali to score the first run of the game and they were able to escape with a 4-3 win.
The Rumford defense was flawless and they were patient at bat. Combined with excellent baserunning as well as stellar pitching by up and coming freshman Lindsey Marston added up to the nail biting win.
All of the players contributed and kept the game exciting and maintained their composure and got the outs when Hebron Minot threatened with go ahead runners on base at critical times.
