AYF Falcons win week one thriller
RUMFORD -- The AYF Falcons escaped with a thrilling come-from-behind defensive battle Sunday afternoon with a 7-6 victory over the Mt. Blue Giants at Chet Bulger Field.
The Giants won the coin flip and elected to receive the opening kickoff, returning the kickoff to their own 45. From there, they put together an impressive 11-play, 55-yard scoring drive consuming more then five and half minutes. They scored on a third and goal from the Falcon 14 to take a quick 6-0 lead. They missed their point after.
On the Falcons first offensive series, they went four downs and out, turning the ball over as the quarter expired.
The Falcon defense made some adjustments in the second quarter as Will Sorensen, Jack "Attack" Lavorgna and Will Bean came up with tackles for loss of yardage. Keegan Davis had a touchdown-saving tackle just before halftime.
The Falcons returned the second half kickoff and to their 36. From there, quarterback Cam Godbois directed a 12-play, 64-yard scoring drive while eating up 5 minutes and 25 seconds of the quarter. Davis lugged the ball four times for 12 yards in the series. Sorensen chewed up the most real estate as he carried the pigskin seven times for 50 yards, highlighted by a nine-yard touchdown run behind a great line surge from Lavorgna, Bean, Nick McInnis, Jasper Turner and Ethan Laubauskas to tie the contest, with a Alex Gorham point-after giving the Falcons a 7-6 lead.
The Falcons defense buckled down in the final quarter as Bean and Davis each had interceptions holding the Giants offense in check.
