AYF Falcons win opener, 37-14
RUMFORD -- The defending two-time Sandy Andy Football League Champion AYF Falcons started their 2013 campaign Sunday with a 37-14 victory over the Spartans from Bethel at a windy Chet Bulger Field.
The young inexperienced Falcons scored on the opening kickoff when Jasper Turner received the kick then went 65 yards while shaking off a couple of would be tacklers and out racing the Spartans into the end zone for a 6-0 lead. Bryce Wilson nailed the PAT kick for a Falcons quick 7-0 lead.
The Spartans returned a Falcons fumble 70 yards for a touch down to make it 7-6 with five minutes remaining in the first quarter.
On the ensuing kick off, Dallas Berry returned the pigskin to the Spartans 45 yard line. From there, the Falcons needed just one snap as quarterback Casey Cormier handed the ball off to Turner who went untouched 45 yards for the touchdown behind a great line surge from linemen, Averie Pingree, Brock Blouin, Josh Hodsdon, Jacob True and Chase Nelson for a 13-6 lead.
The Falcons would score early in thesecond quarter as Kyler Heinzen ran three times for 12 yards followed by a 25-yard QB sweep from Cormier. On 2nd and 7 at the Spartan 10, the Falcons ran a well-executed option play when Cormier ran to the right side then pitched the ball to Turner for a touchdown strike. The PAT kick failed for a 19-6 halftime lead.
The Falcons started the second half on defense and forced the Spartans to punt due to some great defensive pressure from Garrett Blodgett, Heinzen, Berry, Jack Jamison, Blouin and Courtney Murray to give the offense great field position at the Spartan 30.
The Falcon offense scored on their first play from scrimmage as Cormier swept around left end following his blockers for a 30 yard touchdown jaunt. PAT kick failed for a 25-6 lead.
The Falcons managed another score in the third quarter when Berry had two hauls for 17 yards, followed by 22 yards on two carries from Heinzen setting up a 2nd and 8 from the Spartan 25. From there, Turner added another touchdown run for his fourth score with 2:31 left in the third quarter.
Ethan Casey recovered the ensuing kickoff to set up the final Falcon touchdown. Jack Jamison had two carries for 12 yards in the offensive series. Cormier concluded the Falcons scoring with a 10 yard TD run.
The Spartans scored the only touchdown in the last quarter and converted the two-point conversion to conclude the scoring.
Falcons head coach, Kelly Gorham noted, "We are a young team with 12 fifth graders plus an unusual number of first year players. It forces the team to go over and spend more time on fundamentals so moving forward is slower than an experienced team at this level. I'm happy to get a win under this teams belt, but we have a lot of work ahead of us. Ultimately, we just want to get better every week as a team and have the kids be prepared for the next level of football."
The Falcons travel to Gray Sunday to play the Patriots.
