Dirigo thumps Telstar in softball semis
DIXFIELD -- Once the Dirigo softball team finally started hitting the ball, it was difficult to stop and that was certainly the situation in a Class C semifinal playoff game as the Cougars kept their noses directed on the task at hand and shut out No. 2 Telstar at cozy Marble Park.
Dirigo put things together and Cami Denny pitched a strong game in going the distance in the 9-2 win. The Cougars had beat the Rebels during the regular season, in Bethel, so they entered the game with plenty of confidence.
Recent graduate Ambyr Wilson broke a scoreless tie by smashing a solo homer over the chain-link fence in the fourth inning and the rest of the Lady Cougars soon followed suit.
Wilson has been taught to jump on the first pitch and she wasn't holding back. She finished with three hits and three RBI.
''That put some ignition on the fire,'' said coach Sara Thurston, referring to Wilsons drive. ''From that point on, they were like 'We can all hit, lets do it' and they did.''
Telstar had rode the red-hot pitching of Jessie Drago, who had held Dirigo to just one hit through the first four innings. However, the tables turned with one frame. In the fifth, Dirigo scored seven runs on three hits. Dirigo broke things open, benefitting on an error and three walks. Emma Lueders drew a bases loaded walk.
The Cougars quickly changed the complexion of the game. Tasha DeRoche, MVC player of the year, hit an RBI single and Wilson drove home two runs. Denny had an RBI sac-fly and Gretchen Bradbury drew another bases-loaded walk.
"That was a nightmare of an inning," said Telstar coach Jim Lunney.
The Cougars added one run in the sixth, Wilson singled home DeRoche.
Denney was in complete control in the circle, one hit through the first four innings. She finished with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Cougars again played solid defense, led by Wilson at first base and DeRoche at shortstop and outfielders Gretchen and Megan Bradbury and Gabby Scott.
Dirigo had climbed to No. 2 in Class C Heal Points, after having beaten the Rebels and then finished the regular season with wins against Lisbon and Saint Doms.
