Falcon girls come up short to Morse
RUMFORD -- the Mountain Valley girls' lacrosse squad wasn’t able to keep the game within two goals most of the way and came up short in a hard fought 21-14 loss against Morse in the Hosmer Complex.
The Lady Falcons had lost last year to Morse, 10-9; had a chance to tie the game with 30 seconds to go but shot went wide.
MV coach Rick White said the Shipbuilders simply had to much fire power offensively because their players utilized a passing attack to spread the field.
Morse came out of the gate strong and scored four of the first five goals, including two by Lindsay Watts from Sadia Crosby (five assists). The Falcons roared back with Ayla Allen scoring twice in less than one minute, to trail 4-3. That was as close as MV would get.
Morse had eight players score goals, so the pressure on rushes forced defenders Alexa Fryover, Abigail Day and Makayla White) to back pedal and created one-on-one with goalie Jordan True (11 saves).
“We lost our focus in some sequences,” said White. “Team had played well and we have been receiving more contributions on offense.”
Morse notched seven of the next 10 goals. Junior midfielder Tori Field netted four of her team high six goals in the first half. Christina Stuart had three goals and Crosby made it 11-5, before Falcon Elizabeth Glover scored with 2:55 left in the first half.
MV adjusted at halftime and scored three straight goals, Glover and two by Allen to trail 12-9. Morse responded four minutes later with goals by Guerin Morissette and Watts (five goals).
Mountain Valley was led offensively by Allen (eight goals, three assists), Glover and Chelsea Bordeau, with two goals each, and one goal each by Tia White and Nicole Lavorgna.
The Lady Falcons were out shot 32 to 27.
MV continued to play hard, however, goals by a Bordeau, Lavorgna, Bordeau and Allen in the final several minutes proved to be to little to late. Mountain Valley will play its final two home games tomorrow and Friday, Gardiner and Lincoln Academy. They finish the regular season next Tuesday at Camden Hills.
