Raiders down Falcon stickers, 3-1
RUMFORD -- It has been a journey for Mountain Valley and that was evident throughout a Class C field hockey game.
The Lady Falcons put forth a solid effort, however, that wasn't enough in their homecoming week in a 3-1 loss against Oak Hill at Hosmer Field.
A goal by Lexy Duguay had tied the score in the first half, but a pair of goals in the second half by the Raiders was the difference.
Mountain Valley entered the game determined to get back on track. A 2-1 start was followed with six straight losses.
''They're getting better,” said Mountain Valley coach Melissa Forbes. ''Right now it's the mental mistakes that are hindering the girls from going forward, but it's a young team.''
Falcon goalie Kelly Thibodeau (eight saves) and the defense, with fullbacks Ellie Hall and Maddie Kaubrys and freshman sweeper Makayla Burgess, kept the Falcons in position. Several occasions, the trio of defenders stopped ball from reaching the crease. When it was necessary, Thibodeau, a freshman, alertly rushed out and kicked the ball away.
''We have a small squad,'' said Forbes, referring to the lack of depth with 13 varsity players. ''All 11 players on the field need to be working together in order for us to be successful.''
When the Falcons reached the circle, they were awarded a second penalty corner when Nicky Couch fed Kayla Pingree, who was obstructed. They tried strong crossing passes and rolled past Duguay on the left side, but she charged after the ball, stole an attempted clear, turned to the right and beat Raider goalie Abigail Fuller on the short side. Forwards Liza White, Marissa Crosby, Lindsay Marston and Alyson Carlton couldn't jump start the offense in the second half.
''I tried moving the girls around, but there are not many options,'' said Forbes of the Falcons, who lost 5-0 in first game of season to Oak Hill. Midfielder Lexi Edwards and freshman forward Chelsea Allison round out the team. Oak Hill flooded the offensive zone and Erika Hannigan scored twice, with Kayla Veilleux adding a goal.
