Fight Night VI on Feb. 2

RUMFORD -- Following a career in wresting, there was very few options to further test skills on a mat. Then mixed-martial arts came along and the competitive fires was rekindled.

That has certainly been the case for Jesse Peterson, who is scheduled to step back in to the cage when New England Fight Night VI returns to the Androscroggin Bank Colisee on Feb. 2 in Lewiston.

Peterson, who is the reining NEF middleweight (185 pound) champion, will be fighting Greg Rebello of Providence RI to crown NEF's first-ever 205-pound champion. Peterson (7-2-1) is currently ranked eighth among pro middleweights in the Northeast. Rebello (14-4) is ranked third among pro light heavyweights in the Northeast.

The 19-bout card has been approved by the Combat Sports Authority of Maine. Doors will open to the public at 5 p.m., with the first bout set to begin at 6.

Peterson, a Rumford native, last fought in Fight Night IV on Sept. 8, when he came from behind to score a submission against Cody Lightfoot. Peterson and Lightfoot had each won state wrestling championships at Mountain Valley and Marshwood, respectively.

Rebello, an eight-year MMA veteran, won a first-round submission over Chris Guillen in Providence, Oct. 6. He competed in the unperechelon Bellator promotion and also in the preliminary round of the UFC's "Ultimate Fighter" reality series.

The card will feature a diverse mixture of pro and amateur fights, that NEF co-owner and matchmaker Matt Peterson felt positive in addressing the media.

"There's so much talent right here in Maine," said Peterson, who is Jesse's brother and a state representative. "It's been a pleasure to work with the teams that have really helped the sport take shape here. This card is just filled with talent from those teams."

There will be all-female battle at 110 pounds between Angela Theriault of Oxford Hills Karate and Erin Cooney of South Shore Sportfighting of Norwell, MA. Both fighters will be making their amateur debuts.

"In addition, we have several fighters on this card with Maine roots that have moved on to train in other parts of the country."

Brandon Bushaw (4-2), who lives and trains in South Carolina, was a two-time state champion at Westbrook. Bushaw, a 2011 inductee into the Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance Hall Of Fame, returned north for Fight Night V and earned a win by decision over Nick Spencer.RUMFORD -- Following a career in wresting, there was very few options to further test skills on a mat.
