Solid start for Falcon boys' lacrosse
RUMFORD -- As far as getting off to a solid start, the Mountain Valley boys' lacrosse team certainly started off on the right foot in its season opening game, last
It was the Kyle Duguay show as he scored six goals and an assist, along with a Austin Glover hat trick to propel the Falcons to a come-from-behind 15-5 win over Mt. Blue at Hosmer.
The game was monumental because after a slow start the Falcons were trailing 3-1 at the end of the first quarter. However, Duguay scored twice in the first 43 seconds in the second quarter to tie the score. The slicing goals were a jump start because over the next two quarters, the Falcons outscored the Cougars 9-0 to take a 10-3 lead going into the final quarter to play.
A pair of goals provided a lead for the Falcons and then came a dagger. Duguay found the back of the net with six seconds remaining in the first half.
"That was very big,"said coach Rick White, referring to the goal and a 6-3 lead at the half. "It extended our momentum and I'm extremely proud of the way the kids stayed together and fought back. The heat surely was oppressive and would have been easy for them to lose focus."
The Falcons benefitted from balanced scoring by several players. Tom Thibeau had two goals and two assists, while Milo Jodrey had a goal and two assists.
Dakota Jacques, Jon Petrie, Dalton Milledge and Andrew Phelps added assists.
"That is the type of offensive production we'll need,"said White, who replaced retired coach Jeff Gilbert.
The Cougars scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter and had the momentum on their side and the lead was cut to 10-5. Coach White called a timeout to settle the Falcons down and they responded with the final five goals, to win going away, 15-5.
