Ouellette named to Dirigo post
DIXFIELD -- Things change for a reason and Steve Ouellette has experienced it first hand, however, new surroundings will certainly help as he has joined the teaching staff at Dirigo High School.
Ouellette has been named the new assistant principal and athletic director for the Cougars. The RSU 10 school approved the hiring last week and Ouellette will begin his duties beginning July 1.
The longtime educator is certainly no stranger to the Mountain Valley Conference, having served as AP/AD at Monmouth Academy and principal at Madison. He eventually was a victim of budget cuts and at both institutions.
He left Monmouth when his assistant principal job was going to be eliminated. After three years at Madison, the job was cut due to administrative restructuring last December.
"I thought it was a great opporitunity," said Ouellette in a Sun Journal article. ''I know the people of the (Dirigo) community and school. They have a rich tradition and have had success. They're a blue collar community and hard working people and hard working kids. I've had a chance to get to know them over the years because of my roles on different committees.''
Ouellette is currently serving on the basketball committee of the Maine Principal Association. He has also been a basketball official.
Ouellette's expertise didn't go unnoticed because he has been serving as athletic director at Gardiner since February. Interestingly, Ouellette has been filling in for former Dirigo assistant principal and athletic director Jeff Turnbull.
Ouellette said they have had some great kids up there over the years in regards to their programs. I believe Dirigo will be a good fit, and I'm really excited and looking forward to it.''
Ouellette, a graduate of Jay, discovered early during his career the importance of an AD, while coaching baseball at Livermore Falls.
He taught for 17 years at Livermore Falls Middle School. He moved on to Lawrence for serving as assistant principal for five years, while also handling the athletic directors duties during the last year.
