Mountain Valley Rec League opens
RUMFORD -- Week two in the Mountain Valley Rec League saw the three favorites take advantage of the underdogs.
With a six-team format this year, it appears there are three teams who will vie for the top spot unless there is a substantial change in the infrastructure, although several of the winless teams are primed for upset mode.
In game one, Bethel Bobcats (2-0) trounced Archies (0-2), 93-68. Bethel was led by Matt Zetts with 20 points, Sean Caddigan with 18, Ryan Savage with 14, Wade Osgood with 11 and Matt Newell with 10. Archies got 21 from Mike Holmquist and 11 each from Issac Roberts and Jarrod Chessie.
Game two was the best game of the day with LBI (2-0) holding off a game Black Bear Industrial squad (0-2), 109-99. LBI got balanced scoring from Eric Canwell 29 points (five threes), John Benjamin at 22, Glen Dubois at 20 (five threes), JT Taylor at 13 and Owen Jones at 12. Newcomer Eric Talyor fired in 51 and 10 threes for BBI, followed by Ryan Conrad with 21 and Myles Whitlock with 11.
In the finale Hotel Rumford (2-0) annihilated The Thundercats (0-2), 109-24. Hotel's Craig Milledge had a game-high 35 points and Issac Stickney at 29, Kevin Gallant at 22, Andy Shorey, Jr. at 15 rounded out the scoring. The Thundercats had no players in double figures!
In week one, the opening game saw Hotel Rumford dominate Black Bear Industries, 88-60. Chris Willer led all scorers for the Hotel with 35 points, including seven threes, Craig Milledge (13), Scot New and Kevin Gallant (10 each) supported the Hotel cause. Black Bear was led by Josh Albee with 16 and Dave Hodgkins with 15 (five threes).
In the second game, LBI showed their superior talents, as the defending champions trounced Archies, 101-68. Eric Canwell was game high with 23 points, Chris Baxter (16), Owen Jones (15), Joe Gaudreau (12), Brian Canwell (11) and Jon Benjamin (10) balanced the scoring. Archies had Brett Archibald and cousin Mike Holmquist lead with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
In the finale, the Bethel Bobcats strong contingent pounded The Thundercats, 94-48. Bethel was led by big man Matt Zetts with 19, Ryan Savage with 14 and Ryan Kimball with 10.
On Sunday, LBI visits Hotel Rumford in an early season match up of the top two Rumford teams at 10 a.m.. At 11:30, Bethel Bobcats host Black Bear Industries in a potential tuff contest. In the last game of the day at 1 p.m., Archies and The Thundercats see who can get their first win of the season.
