Family and friends that know me also understand my passion for hunting and ice fishing in snowy weather – and my need for an off-trail sled for

I called Boss Power Equipment (bosspowerequipment.com) in Rangeley and spoke with their parts manager, Justin Quimby, about my need for an off-trail sled for winter hunting and ice fishing.

The helpful manager said, “This year Ski-Doo came out with a Tundra four-stroke LT they call the 600 ACE. It’s one of our best sellers and some folks are reporting 25 miles-per-gallon.”

I’ll bet that machine sells like crazy in this region. The Androscoggin River Valley, know for its great mountainous snowmobiling, caters to the outdoors community. Ice fishing, hunting, trapping, and working in the woods happen to be part of the fabric of this area.

Ski-Doo’s Scandic is another great off-trail sled, and some folks like them better than the basic Tundra. They’re a little wider in the track, and offer a larger footprint for riding on top of the snow. This model also comes with a four-stroke engine – you won’t believe how quiet and powerful this engine is, and the four-stroke engine only weighs an extra 18 pounds.

Either of these sleds, when purchased used, would drop the cost, offering hunters, trappers, and ice anglers a low-priced way to increase their ability to get around in the winter woods.

Quimby also pointed out that Arctic Cat offers a utility sled that might interest some outdoors folks.

“Arctic Cat has a 570cc Bear Cat that handles the off-trail chores of hunting, ice fishing, and trapping,” said Quimby. “They also offer a four-stroke 1100cc model that only weighs 76-pound more.”

The 76-pound difference surely doesn’t seem like much for all that extra power and torque -- and the pleasure of riding a quiet and clean-burning four-stroke machine. Four-stroke engines usually offer better mileage, too.
