A surprise visitor from Connecticut resulted in to a impromptu reunion of sorts.
It all started when Tim Ziko strolled into Matt Kaubris office at the Credit Union. The two former classmates and basketball teammates enjoyed the time, while trying to catch up on some old memories, but time was short. For the younger generation, over three decades ago, Ziko and Kaubris were members of the Rumford High School that won Class A state championships in 1976 and 1977; including the New England championship in ’76.
Ziko was renting a camp in Weld, so they set a date to meet last Friday and head over to Brian's Bistro. They were joined by Stan and Jack Kaubris, both Andy Shorey Sr. and Jr., and Greg Buccina. Tim Shea was there with his family also. Those that made it had a good meal and some good laughs.
The 1976 team was comprised of brothers, Jack and Matt Kaubris in the back court, forward Andy Shorey, 6-7 center Ziko and the fifth starter was forward Doug Roberts (recently inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame). John Shaw was the coach.
Rumford teams were so dominate that a majority of games were decided by halftime. The 1976 team averaged 83 points per game while allowing only 48 points. The Panthers were 26-0 in 1976 and 22-0 in 1977.
Shea was a reserve on the 1976 team, but started beside Kaubris the next season. Roberts, and Shorey each scored over 1,000 points during their careers.
There will be discussions about developing a Rumford High School Super reunion (1970s) -- hopefully next summer. Buccina and Matt Kaubris plan on trying to get some people together in September to start planning.
Gave Kane, who was an assistant basketball coach with the University of Maine women's program, is the varsity coach of the girls' team at Spruce Mountain. Kane had been a fixture on the Dirigo sidelines since 1994 when he took control of the girls' program and built it in to a dynasty. He guided the boys' program and it also became a contender in both the Mountain Valley Conference and statewide. The Cougars won a regional championship with Tom Knight and Colby Knapp in 2009. Dave Gerrish success carried over as the Cougars repeated as regional champions in 2010.
The senior-laden team was led by Tyler Chiasson, Nic Crutchfield, Nic Crutchfield, Kyle Hutchinson, Tyler Gates and Eric Bolduc. Although graduation took its toll, the Cougars, fully expected to be competitive coach Rebecca Fletcher and seniors Spencer Ross and Arik Fenstermacher, three-peated as regional champions.
