Two bad innings cost locals in sweep
DIXFIELD -- Swasey-Torrey received a dose first hand on exactly how quickly things can swing the tide.
Arik Fenstermacher and Adam Volkernick each provided solid pitching performances as Post 100 found itself in the cat bird seat, however, those respective starts were derailed along the way. Fenstermacher struck out 14 batters in seven innings and Volkernick entered the sixth inning with a 5-1 lead.
Swasey-Torrey was victim to two bad innings -- allowing 10 and seven runs as Windham rallied to win 14-4 and 8-6 in an American Legion baseball doubleheader.
“Team was very competitive,” said ST coach Mark Bolduc. “We had two leads and received two good pitching performances. (Unfortunately), just two bad innings really hurt us.”
In the opener, Post 100 had taken a 4-3 lead following a two-run homer by Justin Conant. Adam Volkernick drew a walk with two outs in the fourth and Conant deposited a Cody Dube pitch onto Nash Street. Windham had gone ahead when Dube hit a two-homer in the third.
ST had started strong by scoring two runs in the first. Derek Volkernick led off with a single and Tyler Chiasson was plunked by an inside pitch. Izaak Mills hit an RBI single and Chiasson alertly scored on an errant throw. Dube settled down and retired the next seven batters.
Fenstermacher was in control, striking out batters in every inning, including three each in the third and seventh. Windham had retied the game in the fifth. Cliff Turner hit an opposite-field single leading off the fifth, but was doubled up when Chiasson's line drive was caught. ST showed strong defense in the eighth when a rely throw to Conant nailed a runner at home plate. Windham took full control by scoring 10 off Mills, including a grand slam by Robbie Hamilton.
In the night cap, Post 100 sent 12 batters to the plate and scored five runs in the fourth inning. Derek Volkernick singled to load the bases and Dylan MaWhinney hit an RBI single. Adam Volkernick laced a two-run single, Fenstermacher walked with the bases loaded and Mills added a sacrifice fly.
Volkernick was tabbed for three runs in the sixth and Derek Volkernick relieved, but was unable to squelch the fire. Chiasson (two hits) scored on Mills single in the seventh.
