Woods claims skimeister as Falcons win MVCs

RUMFORD -- Placing in the top six in all four events to claim the skimeister title, Nick Woods led the way as the Mountain Valley boys' won the Mountain Valley Conference championship Saturday at Black Mountain.

The Falcons actually held a big lead after the first day of the two-day event before holding off a rally by Livermore Falls for the 231-235 win. Placing third was Winthrop with 238 points.

For the girls, Mt. Abram outdistanced Mountain Valley by 64-190.

In garnering 16 points in the skimeister, Woods placed third in the slalom and fifth in the cross country classical race on Saturday. A day earlier at Saddleback, the junior placed second in the giant slalom and sixth in the cross country freestyle

For the girls' skimeister, Kym Couch of MVHS placed second (52 points) to Lexi Niedner of Livermore Falls (46 points).

Alex Rose of Livermore Falls won the boys' slalom, edging Nate Nicols of MVHS by almost three seconds. Nicols was followed by teammates Woods and Ian Sweetser in third and fourth, and Darren Jodrey and David Adley in sixth and seventh. Also, Lance Richard placed 12th, Eric Billings 15th, Nate Papsadora 21st and Noah Tanguay-Collins in 27th.

In the girls' race, sisters Erin and Elise Luce were one-two in the slalom, with Kera Miller of MVHS 3.5 seconds behind in third. Katie Collette of the Falcons placed seventh, followed by teammates Elizabeth Adley in 10th, Rebecca Maifeld in 11th and Couch 14th.

In the girls' classical, Couch paced MVHS in eighth, with Hannah LaPointe in 14th, Samantha Glover in 23rd, Katie Mills in 26th and Mercedes Gurney in 28th. For Dirigo, Addy Fuller placed 11th, with Krystal Blood in 13th and Sylvia Lutick in 18th.

In the boys' race, Adam Mahar of Telstar was the winner. For the Falcons, Woods placed fifth, with Richard 26th, Erich Zurhorst 33rd, Andrew Boucher 34th, Kyle Gauvin 39th and Andrew Phelps 46th. For the Cougars, Sawyer Smith placed 11th, with Michael Chow 24th, Sam Rock 27th, Ethan Cantin 29th, Nathan Gould 31st, Oscar DeRoche 42nd and Jeff Colpitts in 50th.
